Providing Focused Psychological Therapy, Clinical Supervision and Training in the Areas of Trauma and Eating Disorders
As clinicians, we're all too aware of the devastating effects of child abuse—not just on individual lives, but on society as a whole. What many may not realise is that the economic cost of child abuse in Australia surpasses even that of cancer or heart disease. The long-term impact on mental health, physical health, and social outcomes leads to a significant financial burden on our healthcare system. The consequences of unaddressed trauma ripple through generations. It’s just another reminder of the critical importance of early intervention.

Board Certified Personal Injury Attorney | Texas Super Lawyer 2003-2018 | Founder at Van Wey Law PLLC
As we close out Mental Health Awareness Month, we at Van Wey, Metzler & Williams reflect on the profound emotional impact lifelong injuries can have on individuals and families. It's crucial to acknowledge not only the physical challenges but also the mental health struggles that can arise from medical malpractice. In 2003, the Texas Legislature placed caps on the damages that patients can receive for the grief, anguish, and suffering caused by medical malpractice. This law significantly limits the compensation Texas patients can receive, regardless of the extent of their suffering. We believe this cap is unfair to Texas patients, who deserve full recognition and restitution for the hardships they endure. It’s time to reassess these limitations and advocate for laws that fully acknowledge and address the mental and emotional toll of medical injuries. With the UK General Election happening next Thursday it’s a good time to look at what commitments to preventing suicide each political party has made. Labour and the Liberal Democrats have explicitly mentioned suicide in their manifestos and pledged to introduce training for frontline staff to signpost and support people at risk. We are pleased to see that all three main parties have made a commitment to mental health hubs for young people. Some of the key features from the manifestos around suicide prevention and mental health are: 𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫: •Reiterated their mission to reduce the lives lost to suicide, with a focus on prevention and training for new staff to support people at risk. •Young Futures hubs to provide open access mental health services for children and young people in every community. •Building on the Online Safety Act and explore further measures to keep everyone safe online. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐬: •Cutting suicide rate with a focus on community suicide prevention services and improving prevention training for frontline NHS staff •Establishing mental health hubs for young people in every community •Introducing regular mental health check-ups at key points in people’s lives 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬: •Establish early support hubs for young people 11-25 across England •Expand Talking Therapies •Protecting children online – statutory guidance of banning mobile phones in the school day, including funding for schools where needed. Consultation on parental controls over social media access. #suicideprevention #generalelection https://lnkd.in/e3iETeGx
