Allow me to be vulnerable for a moment...
On February 7th, 2024, I successfully completed my PhD Viva, with some corrections. While this accomplishment should have brought great joy, I found myself grappling with feelings of inadequacy. Despite understanding that corrections are a normal part of the PhD process, I couldn't shake the sense of failure that overshadowed my achievement. This struggle has weighed heavily on me over the past few months.
Upon reflection, I've come to realize that I've been overly harsh on myself, setting high expectations for success that have somewhat blinded me. Undertaking a PhD amidst the challenges of the COVID era presented numerous hurdles, from logistical and geographical obstacles to unresponsiveness and financial constraints. As a matter of fact, embarking on a PhD journey itself is undeniably daunting. However, today, I proudly stand tall, uplifted by the unwavering support of my support system. This journey has taught me a vital lesson: to extend kindness and compassion to myself. Rather than viewing this as a setback, see it as an opportunity to refine my work and make a meaningful impact in the aviation industry.
I extend heartfelt gratitude to the examiners and chair (Dr Brahim Herbane BA (Hons), PhD, AHEA, SIRM, CMBE, Robert Mayer, Prof Kassa Woldesenbet Beta) for their thoughtful review of my thesis and invaluable suggestions for improvement. To my supervisors (Stephen Ison, Lucy Budd) you have been my guiding lights, offering hope and inspiration when I needed it most. Words alone cannot express my appreciation for your unwavering support.
As I dot the final i’s and cross the final t’s on my corrections, I look forward to my journey within the realm of Sustainable Aviation.
