The Western Cape might be ahead of the curve in terms of performance, but there is little room for complacency. Events in other provinces have a direct impact on our regional economy, and may presage challenges to come. One such harbinger of misfortune is the mooted closure of ArcelorMittal’s long steel business - a reminder of how businesses are ultimately at the mercy of factors largely beyond their control, in this case the logistics crisis and the demise of Transnet Freight Rail. In recent months we have seen how the Western Cape is similarly impacted by logistics failures, with agricultural exports particularly hard hit. SA a critical player in global bunkering market South Africa's strategic location makes it an ideal bunkering hub, with Linsen Nambi Bunker Services owning and operating three purpose-built bunker tankers designed for efficient delivery of bunker fuel at major South African ports. These tankers can deliver over 70,000 metric tonnes of bunker fuel per month, with loading and discharge rates of 1,000 metric tonnes per hour. These developments position South Africa as a critical player in the global bunkering market, reinforcing its role as a vital refuelling destination for ships. However, bunkering assets are underutilised and operating at around 20% utilization. Despite these positive developments, volumes at South African ports have plummeted from 2.3 million tonnes per annum in 2008 to approximately 900,000 tonnes today. The industry requires large-scale investment in refining capacity, storage capacity, terminal infrastructure, port infrastructure and equipment, and development of clean fuel energy for ships. The South African government must also recognize its role in ensuring resources are made available for industry reform and sustainability. Read more:https://lnkd.in/dN8-3Wey

There is great opportunity for more technologically advanced ports to support less advanced ports to implement smart port systems and generate emissions savings.
Using SMART port technologies to facilitate ‘just in time’ ship arrivals has the potential to reduce greenhouse and pollutant gas emissions significantly at global container ports. Drewry’s latest research shows that targeting investment at ports with a disproportionate amount of waiting time will generate the highest benefits for the industry as a whole. 🇫🇮 NRC Group Finland has agreed with NCC to transport around 200,000 tons of aggregates to the Turku railway yard project. 🚆 The distance of transportation plays an important role both for the cost and the impact of emissions. The project partly implements NCC’s One-Stop-Shop concept, where NRC Group Finland delivers aggregates and some of the project’s surplus soil to NCC’s soil reception - With round-trip loads, we can utilise returns and contribute to lowering emissions from transportation, says Jarkko Kupiainen, project manager, NRC Group Finland.
