How did Hershey’s make Reese’s a big hit again with a new version of their peanut butter cup? Their researchers looked at when and where people were eating Reese’s and found that the original large cups were too big and messy for some situations, like driving or playing video games, and the smaller, wrapped cups were inconvenient because they needed two hands to open and left a lot of foil wrappers. So, Hershey’s made Reese’s Minis, which have no foil and come in a resealable bag that’s easy to open with one hand. As many have heard by now, 99 Cent Only Store, is closing all stores. To me this isn't just a "closing of a dollar store", it was my innovation laboratory. 1. When I designed my first commercial game back in the early 2000's, I needed art. The 99 Cent Only Store provided copyright free toys that I could photograph and turn into sprites in my video game. 2. When I was building props for my film, Curse of the Phantom Shadow, their $1.00 alarm clocks were repurposed into gauges for the Phantom Shadow's Robot Command Console. 3. When my friend's Sci-Fi film needed emergency props to cover a gap in production, I ran over to 99 Cent Only. I purchased random "junk" that I could quickly turn into new objects through a combination of hot glue, and paint. $100 in junk quickly turned into props featured in a film that now streams on major streaming sites. 4. When I was building the "junk bot" for my next film, I immediately went down to 99 Cent Only and purchased a shopping cart of random bits and pieces. These quickly turned into my prop puppet, Herman T. Bott. So many times 99 Cent Only saved my butt with cheap hot glue, craft items, random bits of plastic and metal. Losing that store is a major loss for a bunch of my innovation and creativity. The store allowed me to purchase stuff inexpensively to try out new ideas and concepts. Sadly, I will now have to drive to California to go to Dollar King to do this. I cannot pretend to understand fully why they failed, but I can tell you they served a purpose and had a customer base. Going to the store was sometimes like a treasure hunt - you never knew what you might find at a good value. 99 Cent Only Store -- I salute you. Thank you for being there.
