Our Regional Manager for the Northern Beaches Sarah Kingsbeer spoke at the "Informed & Empowered: Disability and Housing" seminar last week hosted by Action for People with Disability. The seminar was all about building an understanding of disability housing rights, housing pathways, sustaining tenancies, housing modifications, related services available and the role of NCAT as well as hearing a lived experience. Thanks to all the speakers: Chris Anderson and Nikki Perry from Marrickville Legal Centre and Scott Taylor from Action for People with Disability, A huge thanks to Lisa Duffy from Action for People with Disability for organising this great event.

We belong in historical narratives too. "Practitioners of disability history often model community engagement and wide-ranging access practices, and they insist on the value of disabled people and their histories. Interpreting disability history is one way historians and their communities, public or academic, can practice access and inclusion. Accessible and inclusive history must consider the history of everyone, including disabled people, and be accessible for disabled people. Interpreting disability history is linked to advocating for including people with disabilities in public life and therefore combats ableism, or the preference for able-bodied people over disabled people. B/c its Disability Pride Month and we all have a responsibility to combat ableism. ❗ Ableism - is a form of discrimination that places value on certain abilities over others. It means that bodies and minds are held to a standard based on what is considered "normal" or "able" in society. 💡 Because of ableism, people with disabilities are often isolated, less likely to be able to participate in community activities, and experience a myriad of barriers limiting their access to social, work and community activities. 💡 This can result in fewer job opportunities, lower average incomes, higher poverty rates and financial instability. 📣 To honour Disability Pride, I encourage you to reframe your thinking about Disability. Disability IS diversity. 🤝 Consider the Social Model of Disability which regards disability as resulting from external factors like the environmental barriers and discriminatory attitudes. i.e., People with disabilities are only disabled by the world in which they live in which was not designed to work for them. It’s Learning Disability Week! This year’s theme is all about ensuring people with learning disabilities like Simon feel seen, heard and valued, and celebrating how they enrich society. Far too often people face ignorance and discrimination. Shockingly, 56% of disabled people have experienced hostility, aggression, or violence from a stranger due to their condition.
