Ta dah – it’s a wrap! Builders Merchants Federation Ltd Sustainability Forum at the NSBRC with Giles Bradford and @miketattam@bmf.org.uk. These forums are always packed full of great insights and challenging thinking from the movers and shakers driving the challenging sustainability agenda in the Building Materials sector. I was there to help align Sustainability with the BMF’s Sector Awareness Programme by championing how we are ‘Making a Material Difference’ and to run the afternoon working group session. This important working group will have some exciting developments to share later in the year about the launch of the industry’s first Sustainability tab as part of the BMF’s product data standardisation template – watch this space and thanks to Jewson's Rich Sykes and sub group specialists for making this a reality. Some key takeaways: Giles - ‘The biggest impact we can make is by influencing our customers’ Event Sponsors Lecico Bathrooms and Tom Farrant - ‘Water saving innovations in bathrooms are key to reducing in-home water wastage’ - check out Lecico's Propelair - the water saving toilet Harvey Fremlin MD, NSBRC – ‘Inspire and inform, people don’t want sustainability forced upon them’ Brett Amplett, BMF's policy and public affairs guru – ‘The BMF’s No 1 ask for any new government is to make it easier and quicker to build more homes anywhere’ - Check out the next Onevoice magazine to find out what’s around the corner with the general election and how this might affect sustainability’ Alex O’dell and Neil Freshwater VELUX – ‘It’s important to challenge how we build and to put sustainability at the heart of your corporate strategy – not see it as a stand alone bolt on strategy’ @kassiewilliams Robert Price – ‘It’s all about helping customers achieve Net Zero in tangible and practical ways’ And everyone agreed - ‘we can’t afford to wait for customer demand or government legislation – we need to collaborate to accelerate adoption of more sustainable building materials NOW!’ Great job everyone – see you next time! #MateriallyDifferent #MakeAMaterialDifference #buildersmerchantsfederation #buildersmerchants #buildingmaterialssector

Our fourth Ontario College and University Sustainability Professionals conference session focused on sustainable buildings. Attendees toured the campus with Jonathan Rausseo to see some of our LEED certified buildings and other sustainability elements such as green roofs. Afterwards, we launched into a sustainable-buildings-themed panel with representatives from Ottawa Community Housing Corporation (OCH) and Windmill Development Group. Key takeaways included: 🔨 Sustainability in construction is not just a trend but a crucial strategy for mitigating environmental impact. 🏢 Building design certifications and standards are the minimum; we can do more to ensure occupant and community wellbeing that addresses other crises including housing and food insecurity. 💡 The importance of collaboration in advancing towards net-zero operations and fostering healthier, more livable communities. Thank you to our panelists Dan Dicaire and Ross Farris. #Sustainability #SustainableBuildings #GreenBuildings #LEED #OCUSP

The BKHS Sustainability Focus Groups are in full swing, with representatives across the business meeting monthly to monitor, review and develop our internal #Sustainability strategies. Our Focus Groups – which cover Policy, Material Procurement, Communication, and Company and Project Carbon Reduction Strategies - aim to: 🌲 Raise awareness, educate, and show our commitment to sustainability across every BKHS department 🌲 Look at practical ways to reduce carbon emissions across the business, within our supply chain and throughout the industry as a whole 🌲 Help achieve our carbon reduction goals in line with PlanetMark, Steel Zero, Near-Zero and our Carbon Roadmap Josh Goodwin, BKHS Quality, Environmental and Sustainability Manager: “I’m delighted that so many colleagues have shown an interest in joining our Focus Groups so far, committing time and resource to helping BKHS foster a more sustainable culture. While increasing pressure from clients and government policy and is undoubtedly a key (and welcome) factor to consider – particularly if the UK is to meet its Net Zero targets - I’m also pleased how many BKHS staff have a genuine personal interest in Sustainable Construction. Awareness, education and commitment are vital if BKHS are to meet our Carbon Roadmap plans by 2050, and these Focus Groups are an integral part of the puzzle.” Want to find out more?
