Due to stigmatizing experiences and discrimination, the LGBTQ+ community is traditionally less inclined to participate in health research. In an effort to change this, The PRIDE Study, a research initiative that assesses the health of over 29,000 sexual and gender minority adults in the U.S., takes a community-engaged approach to create inclusive surveys, paving the way for health equity advancements. In our latest podcast episode, Mitchell R. Lunn, MD, MAS, FACP, FACP, co-director of The PRIDE Study and Stanford University physician and professor, shares more details on this groundbreaking study along with the disparities in health and health care facing the LGBTQ+ community. Tune in to find out what this means for employers and how to support LGBTQ+ employees through informed health benefits and initiatives. https://okt.to/T4bvyJ

It's PRIDE Month 🌈 , and we think it’s an important time to shed light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ adults when it comes to healthcare. According to a KFF report from earlier this year, one-third (33%) of LGBTQ+ adults have experienced unfair or disrespectful treatment or have had at least one negative experience with a healthcare provider. Among those who reported negative healthcare experiences in the past three years, nearly one-quarter (24%) said these experiences worsened their health. 👎 Creating inclusive and accepting healthcare environments is crucial. 🤝 We are excited about the work being done by OutCare in this area. OutCare has developed 'The OutList,' a comprehensive database of LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare providers. Additionally, they provide community resources, health equity CEU training, patient experience design, and more. By supporting initiatives like those from OutCare, we can help ensure that everyone receives respectful and competent healthcare, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. 💗 #inclusivity #patientexperience #pridemonth

🔬In the latest issue of the Journal of Health and Social Sciences, you'll discover the compelling article titled: “Health disparities among LGBTQ+ older adults: challenges and resources. A systematic review.” 🔍 I'm thrilled to share insights from a recent systematic review shedding light on an important issue: healthcare disparities faced by LGBTQ+ elders in the U.S. 📚 The review of 110 papers published after 2006 highlights persistent challenges: LGBTQ+ elders still struggle to access healthcare services; inadequate policies and services fail to meet their unique needs; cultural blindness and stigma within the medical community hinder proper care. 💡Notably, viewing LGBTQ+ elders as a homogeneous group neglects diverse needs, impacting cognitive health, especially for those with conditions like dementia. 🌈 Adopting an holistic and intersectional approach is crucial to addressing these disparities. Let's integrate research into cultural competencies and policies for inclusive healthcare. Join the conversation on #LGBTQHealth and #InclusiveCare: we can ensure equitable healthcare for all, especially our LGBTQ+ elders. This designation means a lot to me as an employee of Children's Minnesota, and as an individual. As an organization, it means that we have foundational policies and training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care. We have policies and benefits that are inclusive of our LGBTQ+ staff. As an individual, it means I can be more than an ally. I can be an agitator who affects positive change for the people we serve and the people who serve them. Being even a small part of progress is a big deal! Here's just some of what Children's Minnesota does to earn this redesignation: - The Children’s Minnesota gender health program. - Collecting patients’ pronouns and preferred name. - Updating patient care policies and procedures to be inclusive of gender and all family types. - Advocacy for LGBTQ+ supportive policies at the state legislature. - An active and engaged employee resource group (ERG) for LGBTQ+ employees and allies. - Educational efforts to ensure employees have the skills, knowledge and abilities to provide an inclusive care environment. #KidExperts

Uplifting The Trevor Project's recent survey release — the 2024 U.S. National Survey on the Mental Health of LGBTQ+ Young People, an important resource for increasing understanding, amplifying humanity, and ending anti-LGBTQ+ stigma. 🌈 "This year, our research shed light on a startling reality — rates of suicide among LGBTQ+ young people are far too high, and they are, exacerbated by bullying, limited access to care and community, and harmful anti-LGBTQ+ policies. 50% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care in the last year report not being able to get it, and 90% said that their wellbeing was negatively impacted due to recent politics. With the backdrop of an increasingly hostile national media climate, an impending Presidential election, and debate about queer and trans identity in state legislatures nationwide, we know that it’s a challenging time to exist as an LGBTQ+ young person in America. Yet, the possibility of a better future is tangible and real. By sharing their lived experiences in research like this, LGBTQ+ young people are showing us the way forward. When we create affirming spaces where queer and trans youth can freely be themselves, enact policies that protect them, and celebrate the community that serves them, we build a future that they can exist in. That future is possible — and data drives that difference." Research shows that LGBTQ+ populations are more likely to experience mental health illness, including suicidal ideation. In a Q&A with Ingenovis Health for Pride Month, Patrick Decker-Tonnesen, Ph.D. articulates a poignant truth concerning the LGBTQ+ community within healthcare environments: "LGBTQ+ community members are often forced to wear masks or hide their identities—sometimes for their entire lives for their mental and physical well-being and safety. This makes the interactions between LGBTQ+ providers and patients that much more important." This statement underscores a critical issue—the dire need for authentic representation and understanding in healthcare. The significance of fostering inclusive environments where patients and providers alike can openly express their identities cannot be overstated. "Many people in the LGBTQ+ community avoid dealing with our financial health for the same reasons that we delay care to manage our physical and mental health. There is a real fear of rejection, a real fear of stigma, and those are real barriers to access whether you're talking about a doctor, a financial advisor, or a banker. So, for many of us, another significant barrier is trauma that we've experienced at the hands of both health systems and financial systems." Alex Sheldon (they/them), Executive Director of GLMA This #QueerMoneyPodcast interview with GLMA's Executive Director delves into how the barriers the LGBTQ+ community faces in financial services often parallel those in healthcare systems; and why queer folks often invest less but spend more on care than their cisgender or heterosexual counterparts. This a great deep dive into GLMA's initiatives and programs, as well as the broader landscape of LGBTQ+ health! 🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://loom.ly/18rdWKk #GLMA #LGBTQHealth #HealthEquity #QueerMoney #FinancialHealth
