The Superyacht LEADER Network (SLN) Continuous Professional Development Webinar will be held on Thursday 30 May from 1700-1900 UTC +1 (UK time). The topic is Motivation - Command Inspiration. It is acknowledged that factors such as salary, leave, rotation, and other benefits will encourage crew to join a yacht, and maybe persuade them to stay. However, it’s one thing having crew, but high-performing yachts need motivated individuals and teams who are prepared to go above and beyond. This webinar will examine the factors that drive high and low motivation levels, particularly when pressure and stressors are playing into the mix. We will also be asking how those in command can inspire and make a difference, especially when unexpected events outside your control, such as an additional guest trip at the end of a season, suddenly undermines crew members' expectations. If you are an operational captain, or an experienced officer at a senior level on a larger yacht, and want to undertake regular Continuous Professional Network with your peers, then join the Superyacht LEADER Network. There is no fee to join the network or to attend the webinars. Just e-mail Tracey Santrian at tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com with your details including evidence of your professional status. Conflict at work is something, to a greater or lesser extent, that most people will have experienced in their careers. However, it's more difficult for those serving at sea to escape the negativity around it, as you are living onboard and routinely have to mix with the person or persons you are in conflict with. The result of this is that the tension, uncertainty, and emotional turmoil, that often accompanies conflict can lead to increased stress levels. It can impact psychological and physical well-being, and in extreme cases make life onboard unbearable. Conflict is something maritime leaders need to be proactive about, ensuring measures are in place to reduce the chances of it happening and to be ready to take appropriate action if it does occur. Onboard Conflict is the topic of this Thursday's Superyacht LEADER Network Webinar at 1700-1900 UTC. I am very much looking forward to hearing everyone else's views on this important topic and how those in command have approached the challenge. If you are a captain or senior officer onboard a larger yacht and want to attend the webinar, email Tracey Santrian at tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com and she will send you the registration link. HUMAN CAPABILITY - the personality characteristics and professional behaviours required to perform successfully in the superyacht domain All yacht captains and crew require good Human Capability, with the sophistication needed increasing with rank, seniority, responsibility, yacht size, and complexity of operations. Unlike Technical Capability, Human Capability is inexact, difficult to evaluate, and so is often overlooked when it comes to investment in training. Whilst human capability is somewhat indeterminate, BZ Maritime Leadership has identified 4 principal areas that are crucial for the safe and professional operation of superyachts: Interpersonal Skills Leadership Teamwork Management Having had extensive engagement with yacht captains and crew, most appreciate that they would benefit from upskilling or undertaking Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in these important areas. After all, even if you consider yourself good in your role, how much better could you be if you enhanced your Human Capabilities? It is also worth noting that since Human Capability is transferable, universally applicable to every role, and has longevity, research has shown that it is far more important than Technical Capabilities when it comes to being successful in the workplace. Developing your Human Capability will undoubtedly enhance your professional standing and improve career opportunities. YACHT CREW ROTATION = INCREASED HUMAN CAPABILITY RISK The concept of rotation for captains and HODs, as a yacht crewing model, is continuing to trend upward in yachting. Indeed, some yachts are now offering full rotation to all their crew. BZ Maritime Leadership have researched the effects of crew rotation in yachting, and particularly the implications for those who command and hold leadership roles. We have identified that rotational captains and HODs are now dealing with an additional layer of leadership complexity, which magnifies depending on the number of rotational positions and frequency of changeover. Many yachts are finding it a challenge to provide a cohesive leadership approach, with captains and HODs leading their team in a way that deviates from their back-to-back. When this is consistently happening at different levels on the yacht, crew dynamics are adversely impacted, cognitive demand on the command team increases, and the yacht’s performance suffers. We call this HUMAN CAPABILITY RISK. BZ are the industry leaders in Human Capability Development, and our experts understand the multifaceted crewing dynamics generated by rotation and the inevitable leadership complexities. We partner with proactive yacht captains to enable them and their teams to successfully master the nuances around rotation, rather than them dealing with the unforeseen consequences that often result in underperformance or serious safety incidents. Contact BZ by messaging Tracey or Karl via LinkedIn or e-mail: connect@bzmaritimeleadership.com. We will be pleased to explain how our expertise in Human Capability Development can help you unlock the full benefits of captain and yacht crew rotation. #seafarers #maritime #superyacht #superyachts #yachtcrew #yachtcaptain #captain #maritimeindustry #marineindustry #shipmanagement #mentalhealthmatters #shipping #leadershipdevelopment #yacht #yachting #yachtlife #megayacht #Captains #superyachtindustry #boat #superyachts #yachtcharter #sailing #yachtworld #boating #boats #motoryacht #yachtlifestyle #megayachts #yachtcrew #yachtinglifestyle #yachtie #superyachtlife #ocean #luxuryyachts #yachtinglife #superyachtleadernetwork #maritimesafety #maritimetraining Superyacht Training Group

Superyacht LEADER Network - Webinar 21 March 24 | 1700-1900 UTC Calling all captains and experienced officers at a senior level on larger yachts! Time is running out to register for the next Superyacht LEADER Network on the topic of Onboard Conflict - A Command Perspective Working and living onboard a yacht is not easy at the best of times, let alone when there are frictions or conflicts ongoing. These can range from slight disagreements, that potentially become running sores, to outright explosive disagreements that can be extremely damaging to the yacht’s operation. Conflict will also mean different things to different crew, so its adverse effect may not be readily apparent. From a command perspective, you want a content crew and for the yacht to be operating at its optimum level, and this will not happen if the HODs and/or crew are not getting on. If the captain or a senior leader is involved, the power dynamic might mean there is a disproportionate effect on the other party, with an unanticipated and negative psychological impact on the individual and their performance. The session will examine onboard conflict from the command’s perspective. It will consider the trigger points, how they can be identified, and what actions can reduce the chances of conflict arising. It will also look to identify the best strategies for resolving conflict and how to minimise its impact. To join the SLN and register for the webinar, email Tracey Santrian at tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com. There is no fee. The interactions between Captains and senior level Officers on these webinars is what drives the content. Having a peer group with whom to learn and discuss and share experiences is a rare thing in the business of yachting. John Brining and I merely set the scenes and ask the questions that lead to the discussions - we’ve had our own experiences along the way and are happy to use our own examples to trigger others to explain theirs so the rest of the group can either learn from, or advise if they have had similar situations in the past. Tied in to this is established leadership doctrine and teachable content designed to help Leaders in yachting and to give them the tools to be even better than they are already. I encourage anyone in a senior role onboard to register - it’s free, extremely interesting and informative and I guarantee you’ll learn a thing or two thanks to Karl Santrian and Tracey Santrian of BZ Maritime Leadership who’ve been doing and teaching this stuff for a ‘while’. #leadership #leadershipdevelopment Burgess Edmiston Camper & Nicholsons Riela Yachts Monaco Döhle Yachts Fraser Yachts JMS Yachting Arrow Monaco Hill Robinson #superyachts

It's Thursday and nearly time for the first Superyacht LEADER Network (SLN) webinar of 2024 (11 January from 1700-1900 UTC)!! Many yacht captains and C/Os are already registered, so we will have a wealth of knowledge and experience on hand for the event. Human Capability Risk is an extremely important command topic, as it can catch you out and the implications can be serious. I therefore look forward to hearing everyone's views on the dangers of downgraded Human Capability, and how the risk can be mitigated or countered in yachting. Captain Chris Andreason has some interesting thoughts to share and Captain John Brining has been busy developing a challenging scenario, based on his real-life experience, to explore. However, it's the lived experiences and views of the attendees that will contribute the most to this Continuous Professional Development event and will make it so valuable. If you are a current yacht captain or have command-level responsibilities on a larger yacht, you still have time to register and there is no charge. Just email Tracey Santrian with your details and she will be pleased to send you the link: tracey@bzmaritimeleadership.com. The GUEST programs are” Filling the Gaps” in training for the skills & competencies needed to support the occupational roles & responsibilities of superyacht crew & yacht related shore-based positions across the sector. Traditionally, if maritime training was not mandatory, then there was little appetite to engage, however there has been a major shift in perspective in recent years. In order to fulfil the operational requirements of their yachts, crew are increasingly looking beyond traditional routes of training and seeking knowledge and professional development to fill the gaps that their CoC’s and or previous experience, have left in their professional skillset. The superyacht industry is a demanding employer, always requiring crew to work exceptionally hard to keep pace to meet its needs. It has always been presumed, that crew will naturally learn “on the job” or arrive having helpfully gained the skills needed elsewhere. The reality is that there is a huge disparity between the skills and knowledge needed and the content of current mandatory training. This of course is not surprising, deck and engineering Coc’s were never intended to be anything other than professional qualifications to ensure that crew were able to operate vessels in a safe, professional and legal manner. They were never envisaged to equip a crew member with the latest intricacies of business, accounting, refit, build, leadership and crew management. So why now? and what are the benefits for crew, the industry and by default the owners themselves? In a nutshell, three key factors, -Effective Operational Leadership and Management, -The development of a culture of onboard Professional Excellence -The acceptance of the value of Personal and Professional Development. NAMING YOUR BOAT: GUIDELINES Nautical Navigators, I am a creative! I love telling stories! And after writing a recent post about naming your boat, I could not resist the temptation to add a personal struggle I had in the past with the process of naming one of my first boats. I am an ex foodservice professional, restauranteur and consultant and I had the upmost pleasure working with one of the coolest concepts back in the day. The pleasure was such that I initially felt compelled to use one of that restaurant’s brand concept names to use for naming my first boat! The restaurant’s name? ‘ROASTED GARLIC’ Probably not one of the worst names to name a boat but goes completely against the concept of a nautically themed idea. I suffered through weeks of backlash from friends and internal fights and feuds with family. My mind was made up! I dumped the ‘ROASTED GARLIC’ name and went with a more traditional nautical themed name. I did sense that my boat wasn’t feeling the love and after a few seasons of mechanical issues, sent the boat packing! What’s the bottom line here? I am emphatically emphasizing this story in the hope that you will get the point to please stick with Nautically Themed Names for your beloved boat! Who has faced this dilemma? The maritime world is multi-faceted. The yachting industry and the sportfishing world intersect and share some similarities, but when it comes down to the crew job, just how different are superyacht crew to sportfishing crew? Well, I had some fascinating conversations to learn all about it! Check out my Triton News feature, and feel free to share your experiences.

Noah's Yacht - A Mariner's Rhyme by Kevin St. Clair There once was a man named Noah. He wanted to buy a yacht. Noah had owned a yacht before and figured he knew a lot. As Noah began to shop for one His memory came back to light The first of course Was not knowing who to trust and how everything involved such a fight. He thought to himself "How do I know if the seller knows... everything wrong with the boat?" and then, he thought "Even if he does, how would I know... that he would disclose which issues concern him the most?" But isn't that what marine surveys are for? Ahh yes..he'd been through that door on two occasions before... and still found issues they'd missed. There was that time when they'd missed something and boy was he _______. Then Noah discovered a seasoned yachtsman who'd done this 100's of times. He'd put yachts through the ringer and moisture-tested stringers searching for every flaw that he could find. Surely this old salt could save Noah time and possibly even money. This accomplished sailor had been trusted by many and after closing their deals and enjoying a meal... they actually found him quite funny. So, Noah decided to text this man named Kevin to find out what he could do. It soon became clear after speaking with Kevin this was the best thing, he should do. - Kevin St. Clair Trusted Advisor to Discerning Yacht Owners Worldwide #yachts #yachtrefit #yachtlife #yachtmanagement #yachtsforsale #yachting #yachtsman #yacht #yachtbrokerage #stclairmarinegroup
