📅 **Emancipation Day: A Time to Reflect and Unite** Today, on August 1st, we mark Emancipation Day. This day marks a pivotal moment in our history: the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in 1834, freeing over 800,000 enslaved people across the British Empire, including Canada. It is a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and enduring spirit of Black Canadians who have significantly contributed to the fabric of our society. At the ANNISAA Organization of Canada, we are deeply committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Emancipation Day underscores the importance of our work in advocating for justice and equality for all. As we reflect on this day, let us: 1. Educate Ourselves: Understand the history and legacy of slavery in Canada and the ongoing fight for racial justice. 2. Support Black Communities: Engage with and support Black-owned businesses and organizations. 3. Champion Equity: Advocate for policies and practices that promote equality and dismantle systemic racism. I am proud to lead an organization that stands in solidarity with our Black brothers and sisters. Together, we can honour the past and build a future where freedom, justice, and equality are realities for everyone. For an organization, what does combatting anti-Black racism look like? A few weeks ago, I had the honour of returning to ASP Incorporated as a guest speaker for their annual Black History Month Roundtable, where we discussed the positive strides and necessary continued work toward supporting Black Canadians, as well as the importance of embedding anti-racist practice within organizations and our society at large. ❗ COMBATTING ANTI-BLACK RACISM IS SO MUCH MORE THAN ADDRESSING "A FEW BAD APPLES". 💡 It's building a culture, a structure, and a norm that opposes the systemic and institutionalized oppression of Black folk in this country. 💡 It creates an environment that ceases the endorsement and platforming of these "bad apples" in the first place and endorses Black voices instead. 💡 It requires addressing the ways anti-Black racism shows up within ourselves and having the willingness and ability to have those hard conversations. 💡 It is understanding that #equality cannot be achieved with complacency, silence, or symbolic gestures - we require action. To put it simply, it requires MORE. 🇨🇦 In an industry dedicated to public #safety and #security, working with organizations that understand the imperative of embedding anti-racist principles is integral to ensuring the safety of all members of the public, particularly those impacted by systemic anti-black racism in this country. On this Juneteenth, let us reflect on the essence of this historic day and the unfinished battle for racial justice in our country. Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 when Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that all enslaved people were officially free. This occurred over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Although Juneteenth is a commemoration of independence and liberty, it also serves as an awareness of the prolonged and devastating history of slavery and systemic racism in the United States. Let us honor the courage and fortitude of everyone who fought for freedom and justice and let us commit ourselves to establishing a more inclusive, equitable, and just future for all.
