On #WorldHumanitarianDay, we honour the efforts of all aid workers and condemn the dangers they currently face. 2023 was the deadliest year on record with 280 tragic deaths. Aid workers are #NotATarget and International Humanitarian Law must be upheld so they can work safely. #ActForHumanity

Humanitarians never take sides. They save lives. Under international humanitarian law, aid workers and supplies are protected. Attacking them deprives people of life-saving assistance. We urge those in power to #ActForHumanity by ensuring safe, rapid and unimpeded passage of aid for people in need. worldhumanitarianday.org #WorldHumanitarianDay

The protection of humanitarian aid workers and the unimpeded access to assistance are fundamental components of international humanitarian law and human rights. Ensuring the safety of those delivering aid is not only a legal obligation but a moral imperative. As we observe World Humanitarian Day, it is crucial for all parties in conflict to uphold their responsibilities under international law. By prioritizing the protection of humanitarian efforts, we can collectively safeguard the rights and dignity of those in need, fostering a more humane and just response to crises. #RuleOfLaw #HumanRights No Human Aid is safe in Gaza

I could not let this #WorldHumanitarianDay go by without honouring the incredible people and organisations working to make our world a better place. 🌍 From providing essential services and support in times of crisis to advocating for human rights and aid funding next to political powers, humanitarians are among the most inspiring people I have met throughout my career. I am continuously in awe of their courage, dedication and selflessness, even (and especially!) in times of despair. No matter how small, they strive and keep creating positive change every step of the way. However, being a humanitarian worker is not always easy. While 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers, United Nations OCHA says 2024 is on track for an even deadlier outcome. According to the Aid Worker Security Database (Humanitarian Outcomes), there have been 165 major attacks so far this year, killing 187 aid workers, and seeing 68 kidnapped and 101 wounded. Since October 2023, more than 280 humanitarians — the majority of them local staff members of UNRWA — have been killed in Gaza alone. 🇵🇸 As we reflect on these cumbersome statistics, the resilience and bravery of the humanitarians who risk their lives to protect and serve others stands out more than ever. May this be a reminder for us all to continue supporting and advocating for their safety and well-being, standing in solidarity with humanitarian causes in our daily lives. Today and every day, I stand with humanitarians and #ActForHumanity. 🤍
70% of UNRWA schools have been hit in #Gaza since the war began - some are flattened, many severely damaged. The vast majority were sheltering displaced families. This blatant disregard of international humanitarian law must stop. #ActForHumanity

Today, on World Humanitarian Day, we honor those who dedicate their lives to humanitarian service and advocate for the most vulnerable. The theme of this year #ActForHumanity aims to mobilize collective action to ensure the protection of humanitarians and civilians, and to demand accountability for violations of international humanitarian law. Australia is deeply concerned by increasing incidents of violence affecting humanitarian workers around the world. This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we call for adherence to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and for safe, unimpeded access for humanitarian workers and supplies. When IHL is adhered to, civilian lives are saved, and human dignity is protected. We reaffirm Australia’s commitment to IHL because we value what it seeks to protect – our common #humanity.

Attacks harming humanitarians have become common and can be a violation of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). In 2023, 280 humanitarians were killed, most of them were national staff working to help their own communities. So far this year, more than 170 humanitarians have been killed. At least another 150 have been injured or abducted. These facts lay bare a glaring truth: the world is failing humanitarian workers and, by extension, the people they serve. This World Humanitarian Day, we demand an end to these violations. It is time for those in power to end impunity and #ActForHumanity

#ActForHumanity❗ Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, we honor the bravery and commitment of humanitarian workers worldwide. This year’s World Humanitarian Day theme focuses on confronting the growing increase of attacks on humanitarian workers and civilians and underscores the urgency of protecting humanitarian workers amidst ongoing global conflicts and crises. The United Nations’ global World Humanitarian Day campaign calls for action to end these violations and demands accountability. This year’s campaign includes a letter to Member States urging them to uphold their responsibilities under International Humanitarian Law and a global digital campaign to advocate for stronger protection. The #ActForHumanity campaign is not merely symbolic but a crucial appeal for upholding International Humanitarian Law and ensuring safer environments for these dedicated professionals. Dirk Wagener

This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we’d like to say a big THANK YOU to all humanitarians around the world, including our Plan International staff who helped 22.4 million people experiencing crises in communities around the world. Humanitarians provide lifesaving support and protection when and where it’s needed most. They go above and beyond to help others, sometimes even putting themselves at risk. And sometimes, violent actors target them specifically because they help others. Targeting humanitarian workers is a violation of international humanitarian law and it must stop.
