I have had the great privilege to be a part of great brands, and teams in the apparel industry for more than 30 years. Our work with regenerative cotton has been the most meaningful, rewarding, and likely the most lasting and impactful. The impact of a change to regenerative agriculture from conventionally grown OR organic cotton is profound. From Soil Health to carbon sequestration, the nutritional value of our food, farmers' physical and mental health and the economic impact of farming communities in the US and worldwide. This is a solution that with the INTEREST and SUPPORT of suppliers and brands, can change our future. The US is the 3rd largest exporter of Cotton and is looked to for high-quality raw materials for brands that produce products around the world. The simple question I would ask is, why NOT move to regenerative cotton and be a part of a long-term solution? Within the Food industry, General Mills and others have made a large-scale commitment. “As Climate Week New York 2024 gets under way, the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and socio-economic instability demand urgent action. Agriculture plays a pivotal role in achieving net zero.”     Alongside many of our fellow members of the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development's OP2B coalition of 26 companies, I was pleased to co-sign an OpEd on behalf of Kering calling on financiers, policymakers and businesses to act collectively and support the transition to regenerative agricultural practices. Working together to align both new and existing financial incentives so that farmers can be rewarded for the tangible benefits they bring to nature must be a priority. Our Regenerative Fund for Nature we established with Conservation International in 2021 has been a pioneering and innovative financing mechanism to invest in farmers and organisations on the frontlines of scaling regenerative practices in the luxury and fashion industry. Tomorrow Farms is on a mission to reinvent our favorite foods so they’re better for people, kinder to animals, and easier on the planet. It started to bring this vision to life with Bored Cow, which is made with dairy-identical milk protein from fermentation instead of cows. But from the beginning, the team knew they couldn't just say they were more sustainable. Ben Berman, CEO and co-founder, shared, "If we’re going to talk the talk, we better have the data to back up the walk as well!" So they turned to Planet FWD to quantify and report the impact of their innovation through a life cycle assessment (LCA) Benchmark Analysis against dairy and non-dairy milks. The results? From “farm to factory” when compared to conventional and organic dairy milk, Bored Cow requires up to: 👩🌾 96% less land 🚰 uses up to 67% less water, and 📉 emits up to 44% fewer greenhouse gas emissions Now, the company is using LCAs to support its product development, and uses this work to "empower individuals and families across the country to make more sustainable choices with confidence."
