Today is International Women in Engineering Day and we’re celebrating all the incredible women in the industry 👏 👉 There are around 936,000 women working in engineering roles in the UK 👉 This equates to 16.5% of the total engineering workforce 👉 Women earn about 25% of undergraduate engineering degrees worldwide 👉 Efforts such as the Women’s Engineering Society aim to increase the percentage of women working in engineering roles through advocacy and support programmes At Shawton Engineering, we believe everyone should have an opportunity to work in engineering, no matter their gender or background. Breaking the Mould: The Importance of Women in Engineering 👷♀️ As we celebrate the achievements of women in engineering, it's essential to acknowledge the significant underrepresentation of women in this field. According to the UK's Engineering Council, in 2020, only 12.5% of the engineering workforce in the UK were female, compared to 45.2% in the overall workforce. Despite these numbers, women engineers are making a significant impact in the industry. They're driving innovation, solving complex problems, and pushing boundaries. But we need more of them. To highlight their achievements and inspire future generations, we launched our #ShesAnEngineer campaign. Join us as we share stories of trailblazing women engineers who have shattered stereotypes and overcome challenges to succeed in their careers. As we celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, we are reminded of the outstanding achievements of women engineers around the world and of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the engineering field. We asked Brittany Argueta, a Process Development Engineer for Harland, what being a woman in engineering means to her: "Being a woman in engineering means breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations. Celebrating Women in Engineering Every Day (Even After #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay) While I'm a bit late to the party (International Women in Engineering Day was on June 23rd!), that doesn't diminish my pride in being an engineer, especially as a mum! University threw some serious curveballs, especially during the foundation year as the only woman. Let's just say some classmates underestimated me based on gender. But guess what? It only fueled my determination to succeed. Even the professional world can feel unbalanced. There aren't enough women engineers, and leadership positions are still mostly held by men. But that's exactly why we need to keep excelling! Celebrating #WomenInEngineering reminds us of the progress we've made, but also the work that remains. Through our perseverance and talent, we'll achieve true equality and transform the industry. Being a mum adds another layer to the challenge, but it also makes the achievements even sweeter. We're juggling responsibilities, breaking barriers, and inspiring the next generation – all at the same time! So, here's to all the amazing women engineers out there, especially the mums! Let's keep breaking barriers and inspiring the next generation.

Today marks International Women in Engineering Day and as always we at FCC want to celebrate it by continuing to raise awareness within the industry. International Women in Engineering Day is run by the UK charity Women’s Engineering Society. This year’s theme is #Enhancedbyengineering and WES are celebrating the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing to support lives and livelihoods every day. INWED gives women engineers around the world a profile when they are still hugely under-represented, with 2021 figures indicating that in the UK only 16.5% of engineers are women. As the only platform of its kind, it plays a vital role in encouraging more young women and girls to take up engineering careers. With that being said, let us remember our very own trailblazing women who have shaped the FCC engineering world and continue to inspire the next generation of female engineers by reading their inspiring case studies. Engineering is about connection, understanding and responsibility. It’s a discipline that requires real life application of theories developed in STEM and Humanities into something solid that people work or interacts with. It cannot be solitary work by definition.

Did you know that the proportion of women pursuing engineering degrees has steadily increased, now ranging from 20% to 25% of undergraduate engineering students? This significant shift underscores a move towards greater diversity and inclusivity within the field. Despite facing historical hurdles, women are boldly breaking barriers and leaving their indelible mark on the construction and engineering landscapes. Yet, our journey towards equality is far from over. We must cultivate an environment where aspiring youth, irrespective of gender, feel empowered to pursue their aspirations. Let's commemorate the strides we've made while acknowledging the ongoing work ahead of us.
