Cosmetics Europe welcomes the adoption of the General Approach on the Proposal for a Green Claims Directive (GCD) by the Council. The new rules brought by the GCD as well as those from the recently adopted Empowering the Consumer for the Green Transition (ECD) will be key to fight greenwashing practices, create a level playing field and provide legal clarity among traders. These new measures will ensure consumer are provided with trustworthy relevant and transparent information. Today the majority of the European Parliament adopted it's first reading position of the #greenclaimsdirective in the Plenary session. NATRUE - The International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association welcomes this step towards combating #greenwashing and support the substantiation and verification of #greenclaims. In support of this outcome NATRUE particularly welcomes: ✅ the simplification of procedures for verification; ✅ the avoidance of a ban on explicit environmental claims for products containing hazardous substances + the request to the European Commission to publish a report on this topic; ✅ the allowance for use of private labels where they provide consumer added value; With particular emphasis to #natural and #organic #cosmetics, this Directive remains critical to ensure both informed decision-making and sustainable innovation go hand-in-hand. NATRUE eagerly anticipates future dialogue with policymakers when the file would be followed up by the new Parliament after the European elections. With over 590 votes in favour and only 21 against, the legislation aims to protect consumers from deceptive advertising and early product obsolescence. The text, agreed upon last autumn in negotiations among EU institutions and member states, is now ready to be transposed into national legislation across the EU. 🚫 Key Prohibitions: Generic environmental statements such as "environmentally friendly," "natural," "biodegradable," etc., will require evidence of environmental performance. Sustainability labels must be based on certification systems approved by public authorities. 🌐 EU Objective: Add commercial practices related to 'greenwashing' to the list of prohibitions. NATRUE applauds the Council of the European Union’s recent decision to initiate negotiations with the European Parliament on the Green Claims Directive (#GCD) 👏 ➡️ This Directive aims to ensure that voluntarily #environmentalclaims and labels made by companies are reliable, verifiable, and comparable across the #EU ✅. #Didyouknow On 17 January 2024, the European Parliament voted to implement the Greenwashing Directive, a #GreenClaims initiative aiming to combat #greenwashing, i.e., to stop companies from making misleading #environmentalclaims about their products and services and using non-credible labels. The Greenwashing Directive amends Directive 2005/29/EC, concerning unfair business-to-consumer commercial practices in the internal market, and Directive 2011/83/EU, on consumer rights. The #directive requires the substantiation of all environmental claims with a comprehensive assessment and #sufficientevidence. In addition, the directive introduces stricter rules for the approval of new environmental labels, aiming to ensure that labels will be reliable indicators of environmental performance.
