Primary care and mental health care should be integrated. Full stop. The collaborative care model, where primary care providers and behavioral health clinicians work together as one team, is foundational to Caraway. It creates better outcomes and makes early intervention possible. It’s not the way of the future; it’s the way of now. Speaking of the ease of referring his patients to mental healthcare services in this article, Dr. Wayne Altman says collaborative care feels “luxurious and indulgent,” but only because people are so accustomed to the scarcity of mental health resources. While collaborative care is part of Caraway’s secret sauce, we hope that one day it feels like a given in every health interaction. We look forward to the day when being cared for as a whole person, body and mind, feels commonplace and accessible to all. Link: https://lnkd.in/eu8Kf4PM

Have you ever tried to find any type of healthcare provider or specialist through your health plan's directory only to discover the provider was (1) unreachable, (2) not in-network, or (3) not accepting new patients? If so, you are not alone, as the Office of NYS Attorney General (OAG) recently released a report which showed that 86% of the listed, in-network mental health providers were “ghost” providers. More than one in five Americans live with a mental illness and the OAG’s report paints a grim picture for those seeking or in need of access to mental healthcare treatment. Learn more in my latest piece with Isabelle Bibet-Kalinyak and Jonathan Walzman on how illegal "ghost" networks have exacerbated the mental health crisis.

Ghost networks are a persistent problem in mental health care. Headway exists to fix this systemwide challenge at its core. We believe that making it easy for providers to actively practice in-network is critically important. By enabling providers to make this choice, health plans can have active networks and gather data that helps members get care. Thanks to Morgan Gonzales at Behavioral Health Business for talking with us about our solution to root out these deep challenges and build a new mental health care system everyone can access. Throughout my career I have been trying to find ways to make access easier for mental health. It's been an uphill battle with a ways to go. This week, two new reports came out that highlight the significant access problems for mental health and ways to solve them through policy. Inseparable partnered with Milliman to examine state-level data that was sourced from surveys and claims datasets. This report delves into key dimensions of access: condition prevalence, treatment patterns, and provider availability. In addition, inseparable's own report offers concrete policy recommendations based on the Milliman findings, emphasizing crucial areas for intervention and improvement in mental health care accessibility. Both are worth a read. Both have the potential to make an impact on access. You can find out how your state does with policies that promote access, too. https://lnkd.in/gJT4BCCu #mentalhealth #healthpolicy

The Path Forward Coalition has released a new report by Michael Yuhas: “Equitable Access to Care for Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: Standards, Measures, and Enforcement of Network Adequacy.” The report examines network adequacy, which is the extent to which an insurer’s network includes enough mental health and substance use disorder (MHSUD) providers who are accepting new, in-network patients for a population within a given geographic area. It advocates for the use of clearly defined, quantitative measures of network adequacy in order to improve equitable access to MHSUD care. https://lnkd.in/e398YgK6 #mentalhealth #PathForwardCoalition #MHSUD #EquitableAccesstoCare
