Growing up with both parents in research, science was core to my early professional endeavors. Unfortunately I took a detour from this to join a world renown non-profit early in my career. - They said they did good - Their marketing was tear jerking, filled with underserved communities being improved by their work - They were founded on doing good What could go wrong? It turns out because their program lacked scientific rigor, the work they do can actually create more harm than good in the communities they operate in. Similar challenges were found in carbon markets last year. Last month Isometric, along with Charm Industrial and dozens of climate scientists, took an important first step in bringing integrity and science based accuracy to permanent carbon removal. Isometric released their Protocol for Bio-oil Geological Storage for public comment! Carbon markets were founded on doing good, and they’re now required to slow climate change, and provide the next generation with infrastructure to reverse it. To accomplish this we need scientific rigor in MRV, and Isometric’s scientific platform provides this. But this means nothing without your support. People like you can catalyze demand on the back of this innovation - through purchases, promotion, and partnerships of carbon removal backed by science. AAPG Europe YP Webinar, 16 October   Society needs Geoscience. Now, more than ever. Dr. Ellie MacInnes, Green Technology Business Development, Viridien Group   As geoscientists, we acquire a deep understanding of the subsurface and natural systems. The projects we undertake are often complex, multidisciplinary, and integrated, requiring the processing and interpretation of large datasets. To meet ambitious global climate goals, entire new low-carbon energy systems need to be developed and implemented on a large scale, along with sustainable sourcing of construction materials. This must be accomplished within a timeframe that aligns with international climate targets and increasing global energy demand. Additionally, societal acceptance of these significant changes is crucial for success.   As the Energy Transition accelerates, the demand for skills and knowledge will significantly increase in the areas of Low Carbon Fuels, Critical Minerals, Carbon Storage, Geothermal Energy, Geological Hydrogen and Helium, Energy Storage, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geoscience, Geohazards and Engineering Geology. Geoscientists will have a key role in these new industries and help to find more sustainable methods and technologies to power our world.   Geoscientists will also be required to support the effective communications to non-technical audiences and use our knowledge and influence to help gain social license to operate for the many different types of projects that will be needed.   It is also important to remember that the Energy Transition isn’t just about decarbonization. We also need to consider security and access, environmental sustainability and economic growth and development. Being able to access clean and affordable energy is essential for economic prosperity, and while large regions of the world don’t have access, political and social instability is a risk. New developments in Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) ➡️ ERW has emerged as one of the most exciting removal pathways today, with its potential for scale and high-durability through its acceleration of the natural carbon sequestration cycle. Last week Cascade Climate released its “Foundations for Carbon Dioxide Removal Quantification in Enhanced Rock Weathering Deployments”, a community-developed document focused on distilling the best available science and considerations for quantifying each component of ERW carbon and cation fluxes to drive quantification rigour behind ERW operations. Cascade followed up the Foundations document with its ERW Data Quarry, and its MRV Cost Estimator, pulling together >1,000 global measurement cost estimates from quarries, academic and commercial laboratories, and ERW suppliers. https://lnkd.in/e7qK4ECD Today, Puro.earth released an update to its ERW methodology, with more detail around key MRV requirements, and incorporating new developments in weathering science and field data. GeoVault is thrilled to share our Head of CCS Solutions, Rosie Johnstone and CCS GeoScientist, Dominic Hasson MSci, BSc, attended the 3rd EAGE Conference on Carbon Capture and Storage held in Perth last week. Rosie was the moderator for the Day 2 Panel “CCS Projects -Implementation and Challenges” and Dom presented the technical paper “Potential for CCS in the Lower Laurel Dolomites of the Canning Basin”. 120 people from 60 organisations and10 countries were represented, and while the focus was on geological storage of CO2, the conference also looked at many other aspects of the CCUS value chain. Rosie and Dom’s key takeaways from the conference were: knowledge of how to operate CCS projects at scale for the safe and permanent geological storage of CO2 in Australia is advancing and; we can learn technical and operations lessons from each other as we develop both saline aquifer and depleted fields. However regulatory and policy certainty is crucial to allow confidence in investment in these large scale decarbonisation projects. #conference #ccs #ccus #moderator #presenter #knowledge

South Africa stands at a critical juncture. With an economy heavily reliant on coal, the country is exploring sustainable pathways to reduce carbon emissions. One promising avenue for the country is CCS. Further, the potential conversion of coal to hydrogen presents an intriguing opportunity for South Africa to transition to a low-carbon economy using clean coal technologies.

This allows for educated decision-making essential for responsible energy management and regulatory frameworks.   Dryer's testimony shed light on the complex challenges faced in resource extraction and management. A recent publication led by Shauna Creane, Senior Geoscientist and Metocean Engineer at GDG, sheds light on offshore sediment transport dynamics and their environmental implications.   The paper titled "Morphological Modelling to Investigate the Role of External Sediment Sources and Wind and Wave-Induced Flow on Sand Bank Sustainability: An Arklow Bank Case Study", published in the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, explores the intricate interplay between offshore anthropogenic activities, such as the installation of offshore renewable energy developments and sediment extraction for marine aggregates, and sediment transport pathways in the south-western Irish Sea.   Key findings include: ✔ Identification of vulnerable areas on the offshore linear sand bank ✔Assessment of impact from wind and wave-induced flow on sediment distribution ✔ Insights into sediment exchange between sand banks and independent sand wave fields This research is pivotal in understanding and predicting environmental instability in tidally-dominated environments and provides essential knowledge for effective marine spatial planning in the Irish Sea and beyond.   Read the publication here – https://lnkd.in/eMEdnChz   This research was conducted as part of the Irish Research Council Employment-based PhD programme in collaboration with Gavin & Doherty Geosolutions (GDG). #renewableenergy #offshorewind #windenergy #geoscience #energytransition Venterra Group

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology is set to play a pivotal role in decarbonization. As Ontario considers geologic carbon storage, developing a strong regulatory framework is crucial to ensure this technology is implemented effectively and responsibly. The Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO) posting is seeking feedback on the design of a regulatory framework for commercial-scale geologic carbon storage projects in Ontario.
