During Shea Month this July, we're bringing attention to the environmental threats facing shea parklands, the impact on the shea supply chain and the communities that depend on it. This year, we're also focusing on how you can contribute to parkland restoration efforts to combat and reverse these challenges. The Global Shea Alliance partnered with its members to create a comprehensive guide for cultivating shea seedlings in community based nurseries. One of the goals of the Action for Shea Parklands (ASP) initiative is to grow 10 million trees and important to this mission is the availability of tree seedlings. By fostering the creation of community nurseries and motivating individuals to take part in shea and native tree cultivation, we can all play a role in revitalising shea parklands. ASP empowers individuals and communities to actively engage in environmental preservation, secure the shea supply chain and support the livelihoods of those reliant on these trees. How can we make #mangrove #policies realize their potential and actually work for communites in the Southwestern Indian Ocean? A new policy brief digs into this very question 🌱 ⬇️

A recent SWIO regional policy review conducted by WWF has found that countries have developed national policies to provide communities with rights and benefits in natural resource management, including mangroves. However, realising these rights and benefits faces several challenges, including tensions arising from duplicate or ambiguous policies, limited institutional and financial capacity to support policy intentions and a lack of coordinated support to expand and sustain community-based mangrove management. Conservation that is #communityled is a cornerstone of WWF-SWIO’s work in #SWIO. Although having these policies in place provides us with a springboard to reach our 2030 goal of 20 million hectares of community-managed area, we first need to address the obstacles to realising community rights and benefits in mangrove management. As such, WWF has provided several recommendations to navigate and improve the policy landscape for strengthened community rights and benefits in mangrove management. These recommendations include developing and finalising a regional mangrove strategy and action plan that addresses policy pitfalls, clarifies the concept of community rights in mangrove management and supports national mangrove management strategies. We’re thrilled to announce the biggest land conservation initiative in Mass Audubon’s 128-year history: the $75 million 30x30 Catalyst Fund. Natural lands clean our air and water, provide critical wildlife habitat, and capture and store climate-heating carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere. In 2022, leaders from 190 countries united around a shared goal to conserve 30% of their lands and waters by 2030. We believe Massachusetts can lead the way, with the new Catalyst Fund helping the Commonwealth to reach those goals, in collaboration with public, private, and nonprofit conservation partners. Seeded by a transformative $25 million gift from MathWorks, we’re raising a total of $75 million to help achieve 30x30 in Massachusetts and provide a model for other states and regions to take on the challenge! The 2024 Appalachian Gateway Communities Initiative (AGCI) program will give teams from communities serving as gateways to public lands in Appalachia the skills and knowledge to leverage natural, cultural, and recreation assets; revitalize main streets and downtowns; promote arts and culture opportunities; build cultural heritage and natural resource tourism create lasting economic opportunity. This initiative was recently announced by The Conservation Fund, in partnership with the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA). NOTE: This Wednesday, January 10th, there is an informational webinar about this opportunity. Follow the link below to learn more. Select community-based teams from gateway communities in the Appalachian Region will participate in a program that enables them to build on the opportunities created by proximity to a public land asset and their confluence of resources, fostering economic opportunity to generate lasting health for people and places. The program consists of an in-person workshop (April 16-18, 2024, in Decatur, Alabama, with an optional tour on April 15) as well as pre- and post-workshop webinars. This year at GreenBiz, Kerry Cesareo from World Wildlife Fund, moderated the panel with partners from the Mobile Basin Heirs’ Property Support Initiative—Jennie Stephens from the Center for Heirs' Property Preservation, Vangela M. Wade from Mississippi Center For Justice, and Sophie Beckham from International Paper, discussed how companies can replicate a corporate-community partnership model that honors history and helps underserved communities retain their generational land while promoting productive, sustainably managed forests. Also announced was the initiative’s expansion beyond Mississippi and into Alabama, where Legal Services Alabama will join as a partner. Heirs’ property—a leading cause of involuntary land loss for Black families—impacts communities and the fate of American forests. Only by preventing the exploitation of families and their land can we prevent forest fragmentation and loss in this country and mitigate the worst effects of climate change. #Aboutlastweekend, this is my favorite photo from our morning cleanup, Saturday, April 27, on the Ribault River. Capt. Sam Baker of Sol Margin Fishing & Conservation Foundation had just assisted a youth in catching this fish. I'm not an angler but he called it "a red." Our family from South Carolina said it looked like a spot. I don't know what its name, but before my plant-based lifestyle I called it good food. The look on the Captain's face reminds me of hearing a youngster say, "I did it!" I imagine that's the sentiment every time you have waited expectantly on fish to bite your hook and then, suddenly, it does! Capt. Baker loves nature. He loves fishing, loves the environment, and he loves teaching others about what he loves. Now he has a band of supporters, including us at the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Community Trust, Inc., who want to help him help the community sustain our culture by returning the river to a healthy state. He and Kristopher Smith of the #RibaultSportsmenAssociation, working with the St. Johns Riverkeeper and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) Jacksonville, know that a #resilientribault means a #resilientcommunity of #GullahGeechee people who can maintain their #culture through #subsistencefishing and passing down #fishingtraditions to the next generation. #Environmentalconservation is #culturalconservation. Intervening in the #climatecrisis includes providing tools that communities in its path can use to become #sustainable. I'm looking forward to helping Gullah/Geechee people maintain our culture, despite the odds. When the right opportunities bite, we'll reel them in and then we can say, "We did it!"
