Hear Ye! Hear Ye! This grant is open, but closing May 30th! **Green SchoolYards** The purpose of this grant type is to create green schoolyards to protect the health, well-being, and educational opportunity of children most vulnerable to increasing temperatures and extreme heat across California. Projects shall be centered around improving the environmental conditions and experiences for school children with the highest levels of co-benefits and all projects and project activities shall be connected to tree cover and nature-based activities. Projects will invest in nature-based climate solutions that deliver multiple benefits such as helping to alleviate extreme heat, improving the immediate environment for students as well as supporting outdoor learning and environmental literacy, while also reducing GHG emissions, improving functionality of urban forests, arresting the decline of urban forest resources, increasing climate change resilience, improving the quality of the environment in urban areas, and optimizing co-benefits to school children and surrounding urban residents. @calfirecareers Mackenzie Wieser - what do you think for working with school or parks? Your Countryside in Crisis – a call for action! The Colne Valley Regional Park is amongst the most pressurised parts of the Green Belt. Current rhetoric points to the greenbelt as a development opportunity however there is a vacuum of policy addressing these development pressures/needs. The Colne Valley is at the epicentre of this problem, with currently proposals for ⚠ more than a dozen data centres (20-30m high) ⚠ motorway services ⚠ Warehousing ⚠ Tens of thousands of houses ⚠ Huge film studios and many other speculative developments. 🚅 All sandwiched between two of the biggest civil engineering projects in Europe: HS2 and proposed Heathrow expansion. ✈ If no action is taken and no changes made then, by default, local communities and city populations will suffer the effects of a swell of un-coordinated, unregulated development as previously protected greenspaces and wildlife will be lost for good. On Monday we launched a new campaign where we are persuade decision-makers to act now to protect the special landscape of the Colne Valley Regional Park, specifically safeguarding it for future generations and enabling it to realise its full potential for the benefit of people and wildlife. 🌲🌳 Last week, Maryland reached a major conservation milestone — after setting its “30 by 30” goal in 2023, the state announced that, as of February 2024, it had reached this goal six years ahead of schedule. This means that the state has already conserved more than 1.85 million acres out of Maryland’s 6.1 million acres of total land area.   State leaders credit partnership as key to this conservation success, including working closely with local governments, nonprofit land trusts, conservation organizations, federal agencies, and landowners. Hardwick voters, you will see Atkins Field (CAE) on your town meeting ballot. We are asking for a town appropriation of $4,000 to support the costs of keeping the site publicly accessible (which is less than half of the $8,000 we need to sustain operations). If you live in Hardwick, you have probably been to Atkins Field, the stretch of green space at the end of Granite Street. This beloved community gathering place features a large open-air field, a timber-framed pavilion, trails, an orchard, and a bicycle pump track. It is also home to the Hardwick community gardens and hosts the Hardwick Farmers Market that takes place every Friday afternoon during the growing season. Atkins Field is open to the public (and their dogs!) and hosts numerous events, workshops, and opportunities to engage and connect to nature and each other. Teachers often bring their classes to Atkins to have hands-on experiences in nature. In October, 6th grade students from Hardwick Elementary visited Atkins Field for an afternoon of exploring flood impacts and resiliency in our community. A group of Atkins-focused staff from CAE hosted a circuit of stations around the property, each one centered on a different story from the flood, what was learned, and how people can help. Stations included honey bees, soils, hoop house, and Cooper Brook. Since CAE took ownership of the 15-acre property in 2008, its use by the community as a place to meet, celebrate, engage, and learn has grown exponentially, with the COVID-19 pandemic only solidifying its status as a critical community resource. Over the years, and especially since the pandemic, we’ve seen the ways that Atkins Field is a critical piece of community connection in the greater Hardwick area. Being able to gather outdoors with resources like electricity, wi-fi, and a port-o-let allows more meetings, workshops, and other activities to take place outdoors. In an era of compounding emotional, mental, and physical stress, access to nature and community are vital to our health and well-being. Opportunities for community connection directly fight the social isolation that has become a serious concern in rural communities like ours.
