Updates

  • Our partners Lloyds Banking Group and Aviva have been out in force, helping us record and update our Ancient Tree Inventory. Throughout the summer and spanning the length and breadth of the UK, the fantastic teams amassed an incredible 75 hours of dedicated volunteering – that’s the equivalent of over three straight days!  But how many mighty trees were recorded?  A huge 127 new trees have been successfully recorded to the Ancient Tree Inventory with 141 existing entries updated, all thanks to the volunteers.   Their efforts to map these ancient trees takes us one step closer to ensuring our #LivingLegends get the protection they need and deserve. Great work team! Think you’ve spotted an old tree? You can add it to the Ancient Tree Inventory and help us map the UK’s oldest and most precious trees: https://lnkd.in/ejiDE-9c Find out more about our leading partnerships and the work we’re doing together to deliver nature-based solutions across the UK: https://lnkd.in/dibh-AkF

  • 📢 Calling all oak fans! It’s your final chance to vote for your favourite #TreeOfTheYear 2024! 🌳 Our #TreeOfTheYear competition closes today. We’re celebrating the UK’s biggest and boldest oak trees. The contribution of oak trees to landscapes, biodiversity, culture and economy is enormous. Renowned in history and legend, oak trees symbolise royalty, patriotism and strength. But perhaps their greatest feat is nurturing wildlife.  ❔ Did you know?  They are a haven for a colossal 2,300 wildlife species, providing vital spaces to eat, shelter and breed and the UK is home to more #AncientOaks than the rest of Europe combined.  🙌 But which oak will get your vote? 💚 Might it be the mighty Marton Oak, the UK’s widest native tree? Could it be the Bowthorpe oak, whose hollow trunk was once used as a dining room? Or, will your vote go to the Skipinnish oak, recorded and named after the Scottish band Skipinnish? 👉 Vote now to crown this year’s #TreeOfTheYear: https://lnkd.in/ersCu353 Photo credit: George Anderson Photo credit: Gus Routledge

Northern Forest Outreach Advisor for the Woodland Trust

🌳 Kicking off the post-holiday period with some exciting site visits! Today, I caught up with an estate manager I’ve been working with for a few years. Last year, we successfully secured funding through The Woodland Trust’s “Trees For Your Farm” agroforestry offer, and it’s been amazing to see the transformation. We’ve established a 2.8ha agroforestry scheme with eleven 8m-wide tree alleys, separated by 8m of grazing space. The estate manager is using electric fences for mob grazing their organic cattle between the tree alleys as they establish. Once mature, the tree alleys will provide fodder, timber, wood chip, and much-needed shelter for the cattle. The goal? To create a “green barn” that could reduce or replace the need to house the cattle indoors during winter. Additionally, we installed a new 140m hedge with double fencing with isolated wires that can be electrified to support the mob grazing of the tree alleys. The funding also allowed us to plant 4.5ha of wood pasture, with 85 trees (Crab Apples, Oaks, Field Maples, Rowans, and more) planted in cactus guards. We’re also planning to install two 5x5m fenced enclosures with 25 trees each to create scrub patches, delayed by last winter's weather, but scheduled for this planting season. This project is all about increasing tree cover on the farm, improving livestock shelter and fodder, while enhancing wildlife habitats. I can’t wait for these trees to be thriving and to see the positive impact they’ll have on the farm! 🌱 #Agroforestry #SustainableFarming #WoodlandTrust #ClimateAction #Biodiversity #SustainableAgriculture #RegenerativeFarming

  • 🌳 Add a slice of nature to your workplace for #MentalHealthAwarenessDay and discover nature’s healing powers! Addressing mental health and wellbeing in the workplace is essential, for the benefit of people, organisations and communities.  Working remotely, or working from home, can have lots of benefits. But it can also have a big impact on our mental health. It's easy to work longer hours, take fewer breaks and can sometimes feel isolating.  🙌 That’s why the Partnerships team at the Woodland Trust took on a team distance challenge to race across the country from our two most distant homeworking bases - Buckinghamshire to Perth! Splitting into two teams, and with a four-week goal, we tracked our daily walks, runs, bike rides and swims to see which team could travel the mammoth 392-mile trek first.  🎉 Together, both teams covered an incredible 1456 miles in just one month, smashing the original target and travelling the equivalent of London to Faro, Portugal! The challenge focused on getting the entire team out into nature, supporting one another and enjoying and experiencing the benefits that woods and trees can have on our mental health firsthand.  💚 Green spaces offer a sanctuary for the soul. They reduce stress, boost our mood, and treat anxiety and depression.   So why not add a bit of nature to everyday life in your office? Whether it’s at home or HQ, plants and trees are the perfect companions to desks, picnic spaces and outdoor meeting places.  🍂 From evergreen trees for year-round colour, to spring blossoms and shady canopies in summer, native trees can boost wellbeing and bring nature back to everyday life wherever you’re working. 👉 Add a tree to your workplace this #MentalHealthAwarenessDay: Woodland Trust Shop | Woodland Trust Shop 📸 Team challenge photos

Helping to see a world where trees and woods thrive for people and nature

🌳Why Nature is Crucial to Business Success 🌳 Reflecting on my opportunity to see Planet Earth Live III at the weekend I was blown away by how breath-taking, impactful and upsetting it was all at once 🌍 Look around you....everything depends on #nature. Not just the planet, but also the wellbeing of industry, #business, people and society. That includes your business. Around half of the world’s economy relies heavily on nature, whether it's for the food we eat or the clean water we drink that keeps us healthy and able to work. Even the other half of the economy, all the goods and services we produce and use, wouldn’t be sustainable without nature supporting it. Simply put, nature is the foundation that keeps everything running smoothly. In today's fast-paced corporate world, it can be easy to overlook this most valuable asset to business success but the truth is, a healthy #environment isn't just about preserving #wildlife, it's integral to long-term business #sustainability. As shareholders and broader stakeholders become aware of the risks, the expectation for your business to have a #naturepositive action plan to address these risks will increase. The Woodland Trust can be a key partner in embedding sustainability into your strategy. As the UK’s largest woodland conservation charity, we offer practical solutions to help businesses which include: 🌿Enhancing local biodiversity by supporting the restoration of ancient woodland 🌳Planting and creating quality native woods and trees to benefit people and wildlife 🏞️Improve employee well-being with opportunities to engage in nature through volunteering and community initiatives Woodland Trust Partnerships can strengthen your businesses sustainability goals and make a positive impact, on the environment and your bottom line! DM me for a chat and let’s build a greener, more resilient future together🌳 #Sustainability #BusinessStrategy #Biodiversity #NaturePositive #CorporateResponsibility #ESG #Environment

  • 🙌 For this year’s #WorldHabitatDay, we’re celebrating the UK’s rich and diverse woodlands! 🌳 Ancient Woodland  Ancient woodland has been around for so long that it has developed special communities of plants and animals not found anywhere else. Ancient woodland has grown and adapted with native wildlife, yet what remains only covers 2.5% of the UK. 🍄 Temperate Rainforests   Fascinating, beautiful and incredibly rare, the UK’s temperate rainforests are found in areas subject to the influence of the sea. The high humidity and low temperature range create the perfect conditions for moisture-loving lichens and bryophytes.  🏡 Urban Trees and Woodland   Underrated heroes, colourful comforts and spaces for people and wildlife. Urban trees and woodland are all the more valuable for their location. They offer shelter and shade, support plants and animals, clean our air and boost wellbeing. 🏞 Caledonian Forests  For millennia, Caledonian pine forests blanketed loch sides and glen. Home to myth, legend, and rare wildlife, only a tiny fragment of this once vast landscape now remains. Caledonian pine forests are characterised by huge ‘granny’ pines that can grow to be very old. 🌿 Grasslands  From woodland glades and wildflower meadows, to pasture and sports fields, grassland covers large areas of the UK. They can be diverse wildlife havens and many have developed from human activities. By partnering with the Woodland Trust, you’re ensuring that these essential, diverse habitats can thrive for people and nature. • 🌱 Grow the trees for the future this #SeedGatheringSeason! 🍂 Grab your woolly scarves, pull on your wellies, and venture out into your local woodland to gather the seeds, nuts, and fruits that will grow to become the next generation of healthy trees across the UK. 🌳 Seed Gathering Season is a wonderful way of doing our bit to make the Earth green again. Trees are one of our best defences against climate change. They absorb carbon, cool cities, prevent floods, clean air and protect wildlife. But the UK needs more trees. That’s why we’ve kicked things off with a mission to get 50 million more trees growing in the UK by 2030. That's more healthy, native trees where they’re needed most. They will become quality woodlands created and managed to help people and nature thrive. 🙌 Add a tree to your world and be the change!

  • 🐿 Celebrate the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed this #RedSquirrelAwarenessWeek! 🌳 The red squirrel is the UK's only native squirrel species and was once a common sight. But for decades red squirrels have undergone one of the most dramatic declines of all UK mammals.  ❔ What are we doing to help?  We are helping to conserve the red squirrel by protecting its habitat and we support grey squirrel management in red squirrel areas. We have also backed research that suggests the recovery of pine martens could help boost red squirrel numbers. 🙌 How can your business help? By partnering with the Woodland Trust, you’re ensuring we can give wildlife a future. The Woodland Trust is custodian of thousands of rare and biodiverse habitats across the UK. From Caledonian pinewoods and incredible Atlantic rainforests to fascinating ancient woodlands and undisturbed grasslands, we protect these unique places for the flora and fauna that depend on them.  👉 Talk to us today about how your business could be part of the solution providing nature with the help it needs.
