GlobalIPCo launched its African online filing system in China in 2021 and immediately increased the number of South African patents filed by Chinese applicants. Before GlobalIPCo, US applicants filed 3 South African patents for each South African patent filed by a Chinese applicant. However, by January 2022, this ratio was reversed, with Chinese applicants filing 4.7 times more South African patents than US applicants. The reason was the significantly discounted pricing offered by GlobalIPCo (i.e. $581.50 as the total lifetime cost of a South African patent (from filing to grant, inclusive of renewals for the entire 20-year period)). Despite the same system being available to both US and Chinese applicants, only Chinese law firms took advantage of this reduced cost:value ratio to market South African patents to the 98.6% of PCT applicants that historically ignored Africa. The exceptional growth potential in Europe and the US remains untapped.

On May 31, 2024, Romania deposited its instrument of ratification, and the agreement will take effect on September 1, 2024.
