What is a Backyard Ultra? A Backyard Ultra is a unique form of ultramarathon where runners must complete a 4.167-mile (6.706-kilometer) loop every hour until only one runner remains. This format is designed to test the limits of endurance, strategy, and mental toughness. Here's how it works: Hourly Loops: Participants start a new loop on the hour, every hour. The 4.167-mile distance ensures that 24 loops equal exactly 100 miles. Elimination: Runners who fail to complete the loop within the hour are eliminated. This continues until there is only one runner left, who must complete one final loop alone to be declared the winner. No Set Finish Time: The race has no predetermined end, as it continues until only one runner is left standing.
