Reflections after a few days in Chicago with fellow downtown colleagues at the International Downtown Association annual conference: - Chicago is a great town (big miss not having some pizza, but glad to have heard some live music) - the recipe for a great downtown isn’t radically different now vs. pre-Covid. The model still holds - no major reinvention is needed, more like a RECOMMITMENT - from both the public and private sectors. Time to double down on investment and sound public policy - yes, adapting and evolving is good and needed, but that isn’t new. Downtowns and cities have been doing that for centuries - downtowns, and their ability to bring us together, build social and civic capital, are needed now more than ever - downtowns and cities are stronger and more relevant when more people feel a sense of belonging and opportunity - we want to come together and need to come together as a species. The alternative is bleak - great downtowns can be a prescription to the loneliness afflicting this country - downtowns are center stage in providing experiences that we can’t get anywhere else - we’re stronger and better professionally when we can connect around and share our personal vulnerabilities - Seattle is gonna be an awesome host for this conference next September!!!

That’s why we will always champion the importance of partnership and collaboration for the benefit of the West End and beyond. Do we have our own vision for London and the nation? Of course. But it’s one that involves bringing our peers and partners along with us. And, it’s informed and inspired by looking at how other incredible cities around the world are changing for the better, before thinking about how we can achieve similar things. Two partnerships I’ve been particularly proud of last year: - Our work with Westminster City Council developing a long-term vision for Regent Street, and with Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and The Royal Parks to restore the spine between St James’s and The Regent’s Park (a personal passion of mine) - Our collaborative report with National Trust, Peabody, Historic England, and Grosvenor designed to help address the UK skills gap in the area of heritage retrofit, boost the economy and support its net zero future.
