Our RISE, Save Our Streets, and Bronx Community Justice Center teams hosted their second annual Revive, Thrive, ‘n’ Vibe block party and youth wellness fair in the Bronx. Young people and families came by to enjoy music, food, self-care activities, and connections to local resources while learning about healthy relationships. At the center of the event was a healing activity crafted by young people in RISE’s Youth Leadership Collective, who spent weeks exploring and discussing what it means to care for others and how we can better care for ourselves. See some highlights from the day below. ⬇️

We are back, baby! And we're stoked to invite you all to the FOURTH season of Racial Justice Weavings. These weekly gatherings are for outdoor education and recreation professionals from any school, company, or organization, in any role. First-timers and old-timers all welcome and encouraged! If you are seeking support for: processing your summer or fall season with a racial justice lens, racial justice work you're doing in your own family or workplace, or your personal liberation practice, join us. We're here to do it in community. Logistics: - Wednesday evenings on Zoom, 6-8pm MST - September 4 - December 11, 2024 (with a few breaks in there) - Sliding scale pricing and we will not let cost be a barrier to anyone participating. In September 2020, we (Steph and Ella) began hosting a weekly space for our fellow backpacking and climbing instructors to talk about white supremacy, racism, and racial justice in outdoor education. The Racial Justice Weavings - "Weavings" - were named to place this gathering within its context: a long history and future of racial justice advocacy in outdoor spaces and education. The goal was to foster antiracist culture in our outdoor leadership school through collective learning and relationship-building. This relational, culture-shifting work is slow but it is powerful. We have learned and grown a lot together in the last four years, and we’re eager to keep building and deepening with the next cohort. Message info@greenwoodandduff.com to sign up.

Recently was “bombarded” by the algorithm on social media about public goodness….. in particular about folks all dressed to the Ts representing companies, orgs or political parties touting involvement in public good at staged speeches or high-end hosted dining events, etc. Convincing? IMHO not! The promotion of altruism or good causes shouldn’t be a projection of seemingly counterproductive glamourous imageries against the orginal organizational intent. Do not forget that you are not “the star” but the cause is. The most shining example of #PublicGood or be involved in a #CompanyOfGood is still this:

Starting my weekend with some self-reflection and relaxation. With a full schedule ahead—family visits, volunteer orientation, the American Heart Association walk, and the NJ Devils preseason opener with Sean—it feels good to take a moment to reset. Thank you Maryellen Herrera, CALA for lending me *Get Out of Your Own Way* by Dave Hollis. It’s been a helpful guide in managing stress and reminding me to not stand in the way of my own success. When we focus solely on work, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and discouraged if we don’t meet our own expectations. How can we pull back before we hit that breaking point? Lean on your support systems and take it one day at a time.

💡Presenting and attending the COSA Seaside Conference was illuminating. This year, I had the opportunity to facilitate dozens of professional learning sessions for educators, paraprofessionals, and counselors. I also planned and hosted several collaboratives to break down silos and bring community partners and school community members together. Despite all of this experience, being in a licensure program for educational administration, and my belief that hierarchical power does not make people more important, I was extremely nervous about presenting to administrators. 🪞However, the conference offered me several key takeaways: 1. I have an incredible team and we do great things together. While I had the privilege of planning our presentation, it wasn't all on my shoulders. My incredible colleagues showed up brilliantly, and we were able to share our approach to supporting Student Behavioral Health & Wellness with a group of 50+ administrators who care deeply about the people they serve in different Oregon regions. 2. Administrators are just people, each with their own hopes, fears, and cultural identities that make up the multifaceted person they present to the world. 3. Legal compliance is important, but in order for me to remain in alignment with my WHY as an educational leader, I must continually refocus on my equity lens, which involves a vision for inclusion and belonging for all kids. 4. The power of coming together as a team and connecting as human beings is vital for staff. It reinforces our shared mission and strengthens our community. There are more thoughts percolating, but that's at the forefront for me right now. #COSA #COSALEADERSHIP

I'd love to invite you to my workshop; Connecting to the strengths in Your Community: Looking for the signs of flourishing 4th September in Melbourne. If we focus on the needs and deficits in people and their communities then, that’s all we’ll see. And subtly, we’ll want to fix them. But there is an alternative, focusing on their strengths allows people and their communities the space to take a deep breath and remember what they already have and what they’ve achieved, no matter how small it might seem. In this workshop we’ll explore how to uncover strengths in people and their communities and how those strengths can be used to move towards their preferred future. You’ll walk away with new knowledge and practical tools that you can use straight away to make a difference in the lives of those around you. Benefits: • Increased sense of connection with your community • A recognition and valuing of what people in the community bring to the planning table and beyond • A tool to uncover strengths in your team and community • Increasing empathy with the community • Ways to discover what’s strong to build on what’s wrong https://lnkd.in/ezF-zRWN
