On World Mental Health Day, we are proud to support the OSH Alliance in releasing a set of recommendations to address workplace mental health issues, alongside eight key partners. We are calling on the Government to provide adequate funding for local authority Environmental Health teams. This paper outlines priorities for managing workplace safety and includes vital recommendations for the Government. Fran McCloskey, Chief Executive of CIEH, said: “CIEH recognises the essential link between mental health, wellbeing, and environmental health. With individuals spending a significant portion of their lives at work, it’s crucial that these environments are not only physically safe but also promote positive mental wellbeing. We join many partners in the health and safety sector to highlight the importance of a holistic approach to workplace wellbeing. The time for the Government to act is now. A healthy population is not just a moral imperative, but the cornerstone of a thriving economy.” Learn more about the recommendations: https://bit.ly/4dFmHm6 #WMHD2024 #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealth #EnvironmentalHealth #OSHAlliance

This week, Champion Health published the Workplace Health Report 2024, which contains insights from our Chief Executive, Simon Blake: "Champion Health’s report shows a 24% increase in the number of men seeking mental health support which is incredibly encouraging. However, we still don’t have a culture where seeking help is seen as a real strength, particularly for men. "How can we build on this progress and what can we do to move the age-old narrative from one that reinforces beliefs that men don’t talk and won’t ask for help, to a narrative which recognises many men want to and do get help? A narrative that reinforces all men deserve help when they need it, and help-seeking behaviours are normalised, encouraged and celebrated." Psychosocial safety: More Than Just a Buzzword As the workplace continues to evolve, it's crucial to place equal importance on psychosocial safety as we do on physical safety. Psychosocial wellbeing isn’t just about mental health—it’s about creating environments where people feel valued, supported, and free from harm. Speaking with an industry expert this week, she emphasised that focusing on psychosocial safety means addressing stress, harassment, and other factors that affect emotional and psychological health. By fostering a culture of openness and support, you not only protect your employees but also enhance productivity, engagement, culture and overall workplace satisfaction. In FY 2024, psychological claims made up 9.3% of all workers’ comp claims in NSW, with a 31% year on year increase in non-physical claims. Is it time you prioritise this conversation in your organisation? How are you promoting psychosocial safety in your workplace? If you're looking to strengthen capability in this area, feel free to reach out – I’d love to chat about how we can support your people strategy. As we observe World #MentalHealthDay under the theme 'Mental Health at Work', let's acknowledge that work-related stress and depression are real. The #triggers can be something as 'trivial' as an unappreciative boss to issues of sexual harassment and abuse. Toxic workplaces are a breeding ground for anxiety and depression and we really need to keep clear of such workplace cultures that suffocate others to a breaking point. It is important to not draft workplace wellness policies just for show and end up shelving them. We got to implement them, monitor compliance, and regularly review their effectiveness towards a healthy and safe workplace for all. It takes a whole-of-organisation approach to mental health with comitments from the advisory body down to the participants we work with. #MentalHealth is key and it should be mainstreamed at every level and department. It should be a cross-cutting theme in all our programs, projects, and initiatives. It has to be an everyday commitment for everyone! I pledge to do my best so I don't become a toxic leader or co-worker in the workplace. I call out to you all to be my accountability partners and keep each other in check. #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealthMatters #SafeWorkplaces #MentalHealthAwareness 📸 : my distresser band
