Today is both International Women Human Rights Defenders Day and International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. To honor this day, Politics4Her and Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM) are officially launching our latest brief: "Addressing Violence Against Women and Girls in the SWANA Region: A Call for Targeted Investments in Prevention." Aligned with the 16 Days of Activism theme, "Invest to Prevent Violence Against Women and Girls", this brief emphasizes the imperative for strategic investments in preventative measures. In the subsequent sections of this policy brief, we will explore the specific challenges faced by the SWANA region, delve into the 16 case studies (including Palestine) shedding light on the harsh realities faced by women and girls in the SWANA region, advocating for a targeted approach to address root causes. We then propose 16 targeted recommendations for policymakers. The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children (16 Days Campaign) is a United Nations initiative which takes place annually from the 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). This year marks the 25th anniversary since South Africa initiated the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign. The 16 Days campaign focuses on raising awareness to the devastating impact that gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) has on women and children, and the social fabric of our society.   This year’s theme is aimed at “Accelerating actions to end gender-based violence & femicide: leaving no one behind”. The theme speaks to the importance of ensuring an all-society and multi-faceted approach to fight GBVF urging humanity to challenge cultures and practices that perpetuate gender inequalities and consequent abuse of women and children at personal and societal level.   The Corporation supports this initiative and together, we take action to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. Women human rights defenders are often first responders to violence in their communities. And confronted with the high risk of burnout, they are determined to keep on. For #16DaysOfActivism Against Gender-Based Violence and International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we are lifting up African WHRDs who are creating spaces for collective care, joy, solidarity, and healing. At last year’s Feminist Republik Festival, organized by Urgent Action Fund-Africa, activists at the front lines of defending human rights shared their self-care strategies with us. Sunday, May 5th was Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2-Spirit Awareness Day. To show our support and honour the MMIWG2S, as well as their families, we ask our team to wear something red on Monday, May 6th. SHE IS SOMEBODY SHE is someone’s great-granddaughter, grandchild, daughter, sister, mother, auntie, grandmother, great-grandmother, and she is missing and/or murdered. National MMIWG2S Awareness Day also known as Red Dress Day, May 5 honours the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, 2 spirit, and gender diverse people in Canada. May 5th is one of many campaigns to call attention to disproportionate rates of violence against Indigenous women. May 5 was the birthday of Lisa Marie Young, a 21-year-old Tla-o-qui-aht woman who disappeared under suspicious circumstances from Nanaimo, BC, on Canada Day 2002. Despite hundreds of tips from the public, RCMP investigators have made no progress in this case and thousands of other open cases. Although the acronym only identifies ‘women and girls’, it is important to understand that young Indigenous boys and men are going missing and murdered at disproportionate rates as well. “A 2014 Royal Canadian Mounted Police report identified 1,181 Indigenous women and girls who went missing or were murdered in Canada between 1980 and 2012. However, Indigenous groups place this number at more than 4,000, citing underreporting and ineffective data keeping as reasons for the discrepancy.” (The Canadian Encyclopedia) After countless efforts to bring this movement forward by activists, families and communities, it first received significant international attention in 2004, when Amnesty International released a report detailing the violence against Indigenous women and calling for action on the issue. In 2016, the National Inquiry of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls was born. You can be a changemaker. Organizations such as "Mujeres Creando" in Bolivia advocate for women's rights and environmental justice. Latin American feminists are resilient forces against inequality, pushing for systemic shifts.
