Putting feminist perspectives at the forefront of global efforts to end violence against women and girls.
About us
The Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM) is an advocacy collective of thought leaders, activists, practitioners and academics working globally to end violence against women and girls (VAWG—also referred to as gender-based violence, or ‘GBV’). COFEM’s key strength lies in the collective expertise and experience of our members, who have made significant contributions to advancing women’s rights and ending VAWG in humanitarian and development settings across the world. COFEM’s primary objective is to create a safe and supportive space for connection, discussion, problem solving, mutual support and activism to advance feminist, women-centered strategies for promoting the rights of women and girls, and ending violence against women and girls (VAWG). Our community is open to and inclusive of everyone who prioritises and advocates for feminist, women-centred thinking and practice in work to address VAWG. We are also committed to working as allies and in solidarity with those working to challenge other forms of oppression and structural discrimination. If you would like to join the COFEM community or learn more about our activities and ways to get involved, please write to us at info@cofemsocialchange.org .

🚨 Over 1,000 Days of Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan 🚨 Since the Taliban's return to power, the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan have been under relentless attack. Over 100 cruel edicts have been issued to erase women from public life, denying them education, work, freedom of movement, and even the right to speak or show their faces. This is gender apartheid. It’s time to recognize it as a crime against humanity and take urgent international action. "It has now been over 1000 days since they banned girls from attending school beyond the sixth grade, making Afghanistan the only country in the world with such restrictions and making it the only country in the world that takes away the inalienable right to education only to girls, ripping away their most powerful tool. The new “morality law” is deeply concerning as it is completely erasing women from public life, not allowing them to sing, speak, or expose faces." Yasmina Benslimane writes a powerful statement on the urgent need to recognise gender apartheid in Afghanistan. Read the statement here: https://lnkd.in/djaPWaSi

This case like many other cases is horrifying! This is the reason I chose to dedicate my career to fighting against gender-based violence. I have seen all kind of cases and seen the strength of survivors who, despite the odds, have spoken up. Unfortunately too many times, laws do not provide adequate protection and our governments ( yes all governments ) do no invest enough to prevent violence against women. If you are outraged, ask what investments and resources are dedicated to addressing violence and push for change. Check out initiative such as Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM), Womankind Worldwide, Equality Now, The Accelerator for Gender Based Violence Prevention, and many others to know more.
The harrowing case in France, where 51 men are on trial for raping a woman who was drugged with sleeping pills, highlighted in this recent New York Times piece, serves as yet another example of the pervasive nature of rape around the world: https://lnkd.in/eVXz3C32 Despite this, the EU's 2024 directive on combating violence against women has astonishingly left out the harmonization of rape laws to focus on consent in line with international standards, with France being one of the main countries resisting its inclusion. Regardless of legal definitions, men must respect women enough to seek their genuine, willing consent for any form of sexual activity. As legal professionals, we advocate for broader definitions of consent, robust legal protections, and a justice system that prioritizes survivor welfare over harmful narratives. It’s time for governments—including France—to step up and take sexual violence seriously.
