🤷♀️How many people are you there on board, I asked our teamleader? 🤷And he said, the numbers and asked why Ma'am, what happened? 🧏♀️I said, Clients on the other side has called for job inspection, and the teamleader of this client is not yet back from home. 💁And the teamleader asked, you want me to attend? 🧏♀️I asked, who will take care of your team then? 💁And he answered, that you don't worry, Jr teamleader will handle and we will be on phone. 👉I will come with one Jr and attend, so that if anyone missing, they can attend. 🧏♀️I said, Ok please attend. The teamleader attended the clients and the on board officers said, seniors are in meeting, you will have to wait. 🙋♀️I called to confirm and the teamleader said this. 💁The teamleader waited and late evening, they met seniors and did the job inspection. 🤷The teamleader called and said, we have seen the job, the list will be given, and don't worry the vessel will come next week and that time will have to do it. By the time the teams also will be back to start this project. #shipbuilding #shiprepair #shipping #marine #marineindustry

Employers should consciously try to change perceptions about some industries. This is extremely important from the point of view of attracting and retaining the best talent. When I was in maritime recruitment sector, I used to get very weird "compliments" from peers and even seasoned professionals. They would tell me things like "You are one of the rare breed of honest ones in maritime recruitment sector". I wasn't at all flattered! Why should the perception of an industry or vertical be like this? Some would even tell me that the maritime crewing business model itself is based on corruption and malpractices, and that most organizations or even their senior management make a lot of money from recruitment of trainees, juniors and ratings in connivance with shady agents! I didn't find it entirely credible. Why would such dignified people and seasoned professionals as senior Master Mariners/Chief Engineers be part of such rackets? I couldn't find any plausible explanation. Then, when during intakes of trainees, rumors gathered steam about dubious agents charging huge sums of money to manipulate existing systems, I was quite shocked! I proposed to my organization to let me try transitioning to online tests with the help of those who are leaders in the online testing domain like Pearson Vue or Eduquity. My organization agreed and the perceptions did change to some extent though rumours of back-end manipulations, test paper/content leakage and project managers/service providers getting compromised continued! We also tried to bring in in-house online screening tools or those by Seagull for other ranks. But isn't digitalisation also prone to manipulations and vulnerabilities? Surely there are concerns regarding cybersecurity, data theft, back end manipulations, deliberate injections of bugs/viruses and then selling of solutions/fixes/service packs to address them etc. but the benefits of digitalisation far outweigh these "side effects"! Contrast this with damaging perceptions of blatant corruption as is perceived in maritime recruitment sector. How do organizations change such harmful perceptions? They should firstly be courageous enough to employ people with impeccable reputation. And then bring about systemic changes that address the concerns. Digitalisation is surely a potent tool to bring about the necessary transparency that can command credibility. Otherwise the modern generation would be too reluctant to join or continue in archaic industries such as maritime sector. Youngsters surely have a knack of intuitively gauging when something is amiss. I have seen many of them quitting sea life after a few contracts when they see that values practiced onboard are actually "shadow values" not in congruence with professed values! At the very least when organizations start making efforts to change the damaging perceptions, their credibility automatically starts improving. #perceptions #corruption #malpractices #credibility #digitalisation #transparency
