Important Announcement: Cancellation of Australia Day 2025 Event The City of Armadale has made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel the Australia Day 2025 event and fireworks. This decision comes in light of the Metronet Byford Rail Extension works, which will significantly impact the areas around Minnawarra Park and Armadale Road in January 2025, making it unsafe for large public gatherings. Our team explored various alternative locations and event formats, but after thorough consideration, the Council concluded that cancelling the 2025 event is the best option to ensure the safety and integrity of our celebrations. We plan to utilise the funds reserved for 2025 to host an even bigger and better event in 2026, welcoming everyone back to the City Centre. Mayor Ruth Butterfield stated, "The City recognises the continuing popularity of our Australia Day Event, and we want to ensure this annual feature is the best that we can offer. The unavoidable works around Minnawarra Park meant we had to look at alternative arrangements, and as a Council, we decided that cancelling the 2025 event was the best option under the circumstances. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2026." We understand this news may be disappointing, and we appreciate your understanding and support. For more details on this decision and the proposed alternatives, please refer to the Council minutes available on our website at https://buff.ly/3Xw853R. #CityOfArmadale #AustraliaDay2025 #CommunityUpdate #MetronetWorks #PublicSafety

Excited to present on behalf of Cohousing Australia at the Planning Institute Australia Congress on 24 May, Cohousing refers to a community of people who intentionally live together and share some resources, while also maintaining independent lives. It has the ability to not only provide for greater housing diversity but also to deliver more affordable options in a manner that creates livable neighbourhoods, and sustainable and resilient communities. The market failure of current housing delivery options is not only denying property ownership for an increasing section of the population, but also is not delivering the neighbourhood character, community, wellness and livability outcomes being sought by the wider community. While Cohousing projects tick all the boxes for the strategic planning objectives of local government planning schemes (Built form for Health and Wellbeing, creating resilient communities to respond to climate change, addressing social isolation, providing more diverse and affordable housing options, supporting reducing environmental footprints, living in intergenerational communities). The presentation will use examples to illustrate that while citizen-led housing can respond to these outcomes, planning permit processes taking reductionist, and narrowly applying planning controls are frustrating achieving these outcomes. Highlighted will be the types of problems and frustrations faced by innovative developments. The presentation will point to how planners and planning processes can take more proactive, integrated and facilitative approaches. This will include how planners doing things differently can act as change agents, adapting and evolving to provide supportive planning tools and innovative processes and practices. #PIACongress24 https://lnkd.in/gG6pxyug

I am taking part in the Urban Living Festival next week, it should be a great event Piers and his team at International Hospitality Media always put on a great event. It will be interesting to see if there are any ideas offered up to address the affordable housing crisis in the UK. A recent Crisis report gave the following depressing stats, 'Meanwhile, the UK Government has published data revealing that the number of households trapped in temporary accommodation in England has reached a new record high. 112,660 households were living in temporary accommodation such as nightly paid B&Bs between October and December 2023 - an increase of 12% on the same period last year, and an increase of 98% on 2013. This includes over 145,800 children.' 145,800 kids in poorly suited accommodation seems like a lot to me. And the cost of the temporary accommodation hit £1.7bn last year. I'd like to think there are better ways of using that money and creating a more permanent and more humane solution. This is the sort of 'Urban Living' that needs to be changed and I think there are enough clever people going along next Thursday to come up with some suggestions. https://lnkd.in/e9axNmWp

We were excited to sponsor the Property Council of Australia: Plan Victoria: Making sure that it’s also a plan for Geelong event this week. Keynote speaker Lester Townsend, Department of Transport and Planning was joined by panellists Ali Wastie, City of Greater Geelong, and Michael Johnston, Committee for Geelong as they discussed the opportunities to be gained from the new Plan for Victoria for the Geelong region. There was also a call to action for individuals in the room and the wider community to have their say and get involved through the current engagement process. Key takeaways included: • Plan Victoria will seek to complement and build upon the existing suite of strategies and plans that the Geelong region has prepared in recent years; not just another strategy for the sake of it. • Plan Victoria will focus on action-oriented directions making it a fully implementable plan; transitioning from policy to action and seeking to address critical issues including those relating to housing affordability. • Panel discussions focused on the need for a nuanced approach to the Geelong region, and the potential need for a specific Geelong region focus within Plan Victoria. • Plan for Victoria will go live late 2024 and will be a ‘living document’. Place North has been supporting the property market for 18 years now. We are a small privately owned company that does big things, but it is only now, with our wider reach and position, that we are able to put into action some of our more strategic aspirations. After consulting with some of the region’s senior advisors, it was clear there is a need to do more to support registered providers and local authorities. We are not a one off show or a new arrival to the market and as such we know that we occupy a position that has become ever more useful to the Northern property market. Local #authorities and registered providers are often the conduits to significant #regeneration and housing masterplans. We are very proud to be able to take this decision to make the Place North #conferences so much more accessible to these sectors. Place North is Place North West, Place Yorkshire and Place North East
