💬 Let’s talk about Internships Internships serve as essential stepping stones for learners embarking on their career journeys, offering a myriad of benefits for both individuals and organizations alike. For interns, these opportunities provide hands-on experience, skill development, networking opportunities, and career exploration. For organizations, interns bring unique perspectives, skills, and insights that can enrich teams and contribute to innovation within organizations. We are committed to increasing the participation of First Nations in the tech sector, which is why our newly Indigenous-Designed Career Services division’s goal is to place 20 Indigenous interns in 2024. ⬇️ For those with internship experience, what’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned as an intern or intern supervisor? Where have all the internships gone? There’s been a lot of talk around the decline of internships this year, as top companies have looked to cut costs by reducing the amount of young workers they’re welcoming onto their sought-after summer programs. Per data from student job search site Handshake, some key industries have been cooling on intern programs, with internship postings down in tech (-14%) and financial services (-13%) year-over-year in May ‘24. 2024 Summer Analyst @PKF | 2024 Spring Intern @ Citi, RBC, Fidelity & Natwest | BSc Economics student at the University of Bristol | 23/24 ACS Vice President
🚨SPRING WEEK APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN NOW🚨 Hi, I’m Naomi! I’ve been fortunate enough to have secured 6 spring weeks, 2 summer internships for 2024 and 3 summer internships for 2025. Sharing knowledge has always been a priority for me, so this year I’m offering advice to help others through the application process. For those unfamiliar with spring weeks, they are short work experience programmes (usually 2-5 days) designed to introduce you to a company and the division you're interested in, such as corporate banking. They are typically aimed at students two years from graduation (1st year of a 3-year course or 2nd year of a 4-year course etc ). Spring weeks often offer a pathway to summer internships, which can then lead to graduate roles. With the current competitive job market, it’s crucial to start early! Feel free to message me if you’d like tips - I'm happy to help :)

Internships are valuable - how can we make them more enticing and equitable? *Share the value of what can be learned. It's not about making coffee and copies, though that myth still persists. Help students catch the vision. *Instill the expectation early, so that people have time to plan. This is especially important for students balancing delicate financial situations. *Pay them (when possible) so that the applicant pool is open to everyone, not just the ones who can afford it. *Build partnerships and pathways with a variety of institutions and degree levels. Skilled workers are needed at every level, so let's build them up!
Happy #NationalInternDay! A big "Thank you!" to all the interns (especially our great interns at ED!) for your hard work & fresh perspectives, and thanks as well to everyone supporting interns & internship opportunities. #ThankYouThursday
