Priviliged to witness an excellent co-presentation by Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) & Melbourne Airport around the forward direction for one of both Victoria’s & the nation’s most critical infrastructure. Thank you Felicia Mariani (GAICD) & Lorie Argus & respective teams. It really is pleasing to witness the ongoing, deeper conversation & sharing of insights & ideas around the criticality of airports & their intersection with our all-critical visitor economy. This conversation has improved immeasurably in the past two decades of my Australian aviation & aerospace watch. That’s a good and important thing. Of course there’s also the all critical role of the airlines in the commercial and operational mix. Such conversation & thoughtful & informed public policy discussion & direction needs to be retained because there is increasingly a lot at stake and we need the data and insight to keep public policy makers on their toes! No clearer message takeout today than for every new daily international flight, its direct economy delivery for Melbs is $154 million annually (by daily flight)! Greater Melbourne is benefitted by its multiple major Airports, headlined by Australia’s largest 24/7 gateway at ‘Tullamarine’ along with Melbourne Avalon Airport In coming years they’ll attempt to be rivalled by Sydney Airport joined by Western Sydney International Airport & their future introduced operations. Competiton drives opportunity as well as Innovation. Its been a feature of our aviation industry. Victoria however has every chance of retaining their critical standing in aviation offering. The strong future COVID ramp up signal of customer amenity & better meeting the needs of flyers, the regular & the casual, through to greater accessibility measures, is also being seriously & commercially factored into future operations. Whilst the urge to regulate and again some more across this critical industry, the power of competition within the right framework has every chance of delivering better outcomes. Let’s hope some of this can fly.
