This morning, the House Agriculture Committee advanced the Farm, Food and National Security Act of 2024 (HR 8467). American Forests looks forward to continued discussions between the chambers and ultimately a bipartisan bill. The Farm Bill, renewed every five years, provides a crucial opportunity to support public, private and Tribal forests. American Forests is hopeful that Congress can come together to address key areas such as reforestation needs, urban and community forestry programs, forest landowner empowerment and all-lands wildfire resilience through this year’s #FarmBill. https://lnkd.in/eXWDhMKV

The Biden Administration's budget shows The White House's commitment to climate-centered funding. Emphasizing the value of urban and community forestry, as well as the conservation of our forested landscapes, these policies not only protect the environment but also lead to job creation, particularly in historically disadvantaged communities. #DidYouKnow that in 2023: 🦅 WPC permanently protected and saved 3,079 acres for nature and future generations? 🙋 699 volunteers helped us plant 940 trees through TreeVitalize Pittsburgh and other community forestry programs? 🐟 Our watershed conservation team removed 10 barriers to reconnect 12 miles of stream? Last week, while out surveying deer exclosure plots for one of our clients I had a stark reminder of how heavy deer presence/impact can affect a woodland's ability to regenerate. In the photo, on the right (inside the exclosure plot), we can see an abundance of 1st year Beech saplings, while on the left and sadly through the majority of the woodland, almost no saplings where observed. In a changing climate, with increasing pressure from new diseases and shifting social considerations, I feel we should be implementing more Continuous Cover Forestry systems in our woodland. Therefore encouraging natural regeneration to play a vital role in created multi - layered woodlands. However, CCF can not coincide with rising deer populations, with management made difficult, especially in public access woodlands.

Today is the World Environment Day by the United Nations. 🌎 This year's theme is focused on land restoration, halting desertification and building drought resilience.
