At SLIF, Jill Vitale-Aussem shared powerful insights on how to create a more inclusive and empowering culture within senior living communities. Her key message? Transformation begins with conversation. Jill emphasized that no one ever says, "I don't want people to feel like they belong here." Yet, fostering a true sense of belonging requires intentional effort. The first step is to start asking questions and involving more people in decision-making processes. As Jill put it, "Better decisions are made when you involve more people." When communities become more open and accepting, the outcomes are remarkable. Residents start to own the ideas and become more inclusive. There's a shift from "me" to "we," from feeling entitled to feeling empowered, and from focusing on individual rights to embracing shared responsibilities. Limited beliefs fall away, and a stronger, more vibrant community emerges. https://hubs.li/Q02Bbd150

Reflective journal SCSH 2163: week 13 Improving fieldwork in community engagement involves several key strategies to enhance effectiveness and impact. First, thorough preparation is essential, including researching the community, establishing clear objectives, and understanding cultural sensitivities. Engaging with community members respectfully and actively listening to their perspectives builds trust and fosters collaboration. Utilizing diverse communication channels and involving local leaders and stakeholders ensures inclusivity and broad participation. Implementing feedback mechanisms and continuously evaluating and adapting strategies based on community input enhances relevance and effectiveness. Additionally, providing adequate training and support for fieldworkers in communication, empathy, and cultural competence further strengthens engagement efforts. By prioritizing these approaches, fieldwork in community engagement can achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes that benefit all stakeholders involved.

In a world where connections are more valuable than ever, let's not underestimate the incredible impact of community. 💬🤝 Communities aren't just about sharing space; they're about sharing experiences, knowledge, and support. When addressing public participation or engagement, we should stop using the term "Stakeholder," as it may carry negative connotations for many communities. (It always reminds me of the Izzard "do you have a flag" routine.) The objective of public involvement is to foster open communication with the community rather than creating a sense of alienation. Consider using alternative terms such as: Residents Interested parties Partners Participants Collaborators (internal, external, government, community, etc.) Community Community members These alternatives not only convey a more positive tone but also align better with the inclusive and participatory nature of effective community engagement.
