I’m not a feminist at all, but what I like most about the modern world is that women are no longer on the sidelines. Recent movies prove it: "Wonder Woman," "Mad Max: Fury Road," "The Hunger Games," "Cold Heart," and "Barbie". All of these women, including the actresses and directors, are changing the world of cinema and nurturing a new generation without prejudice. It’s International Women’s Day! If you don’t know already, everyone at Sales UpRising loves to celebrate the wins of entrepreneurs, may they be rocking a thriving business or just starting out. This IWD, we’re thrilled to take a moment and honor all of the ladies that are making a name for themselves in their industries and changing the way women are seen in the world of business! Recently, Wells Fargo Newsroom released an article that offered several stats about women-owned businesses in our post pandemic world. We’d love to share some of the exciting information we learned from their well-researched publication. From 2019-2023, women have taken things up a notch in the business world. In fact, during the pandemic when many male-owned businesses were closing doors or losing revenue, women were opening even more businesses than were closing, and increased their revenue immensely. In fact, women outpaced men by 94.3% for number of firms, 252.8% for employment, and 82.0% for revenue. On top of that, half a million women owned businesses that earned between $250,000 and $999,999 grew their revenue by 30% allowing them to inch closer to millionaire earnings. Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino women-owned businesses increased at an even faster rate as we entered the post-pandemic world. So, let’s give the ladies a round of applause for being true rockstars when adversity struck and helping to set the pace for the business world as we move past the pandemic. The future is bright for women, and we’re excited to see what the upcoming years bring! Before our Dames founder, Meghann Conter, broke through to six figures, she realized she was "fishing in the wrong ponds," and her network mirrored her lack of growth. The local experts were sharing the same strategies, experiencing similar growth ceilings, and offering little that challenged her.  Not only did Meghann lack the role models she was craving, but she also began believing they didn't exist. So, she paused local networking for 18 months and built a new approach. Leveraging her branding and marketing expertise, she developed strategic relationships with power partners aligned with her desired clients. She also began seeking introductions to women running high-six and seven-figure companies.  The more women she met running higher revenue businesses, the less “different” or “intimidated” she felt by them. She connected deeply and realized they didn’t have superpowers, two brains, or eight limbs.  By taking a genuine interest in their stories and facilitating connections to support their missions, Meghann prioritized serving others first. This shift is what forged these deep impactful bonds; she served them before ever expecting anything in return. "If someone comes to you with a gold-plated resume, but does not share your core values, DO NOT hire them. They could have the greatest experience in the world, but they will be a cancer to your organization and your team." — Kendra Scott Wow. So many leaders have shared with me their regret of bringing on the wrong hires, but none have articulated this hard lesson as clearly as Kendra has. Designer, founder, and philanthropist Kendra Scott started her company with only $500 just three months after her first son was born, and after a first failed business. The jewelry mogul we all know and love today, had her fair share of "thanks, but no thanks"; starting by going door-to-door to Austin boutiques armed only with a tea box full of her jewelry. While she never wanted to get into direct retail with the brand, the 2008 financial crisis hit, and the stores she was selling wholesale to ended up shutting down left and right. Bigger department stores were moving in the direction of creating their own private labels, instead of working with designers like Kendra. This was a wake-up call. What she calls a "shake the snow-globe moment". She knew she had to build direct relationships with her customers. And so she did. Known for her dynamic use of color and genuine materials, Kendra’s commitment to innovation, quality, and detail won over loyal fans, media, and celebrities alike; defining the 'affordable luxury' category. Years later, private equity firm Berkshire Partners invested in the company at a valuation of more than $1 billion. Today, with over 2,000 employees, Kendra Scott boasts a thriving e-commerce business and over 100 standalone stores and has expanded beyond fashion jewelry into the categories of fine jewelry, home décor, and beauty.
