Some of the largest asset managers in the world have been found investing in fossil fuel companies through what they explicitly claim to be sustainability or ESG focused funds. Reclaim Finance is an NGO that analyses the data of financial organisations to identify surreptitious activities in the garb of green investments. They have analysed publicly available fund level portfolio and looked for fossil fuel companies. The result was not so surprising. (Report in the first comment) The list of culprits includes some of the biggest names in the sector including Blackrock, Amundi. Interestingly, they are also signatories of Net Zero Asset Manager Initiative (NZAM). This means they have committed to prioritising efforts to make sure the new investments are not into companies involved in fossil fuel expansion. It has been obvious for some time that such industry alliances have been a sham and this episode just reenforces it. It is high time that the regulators (pressurised by citizens) wake up. The amendments to SEC Rule 35d-1 will now force funds with ESG and ESG terms in their name to explain what the fund invests in and how it aligns with the fund name.     Here at Reflection Asset Management, we use the SEE (Stakeholders, Environment, Ethos) methodology to allow our clients to align their investments with their values.
