When designing industrial exoskeletons, most designers and engineers would think of the end user as an adult who is at risk of injury or is already injured but rarely does anyone think about designing an occupational exoskeleton for the already disabled population. There are a lot of steps in the fashion design process, and although designers are involved in all aspects, the majority of design's tasks are focused on the design development stage. Many people believe that involves lots of creative tasks, but interestingly enough, in a fashion business, the creative part does NOT take up the majority of your time. Many design tasks are much more technical, and this is where digital design software and tools become helpful. It may or may not be needless to say, but many of those "technical" tasks are not tasks a designer loves to do. They're usually necessary but not always the most fun or creative. Incorporating digital design tools can help you get those tasks done more quickly and more efficiently (so you can get back to the tasks you DO enjoy!) You have to make a conscious effort to improve your professional skills digitally in the current digital era. That, for me, was the best option. Though I am still a fashion designer, I truly enjoy the process of upskilling. I came upon a job description for a fashion designer position in a large fashion company that listed "the ability to create designs digitally and proficiency in software like CLO3D" as one of the requirements. I will admit that I was ignorant of this, as I have always created patterns on paper. After completing my research, I signed up for the Coursera course on Digital Fashion. Being a designer, I’m often asked how I constantly come up with creative ideas. My response: deeply engrossed in everyday mundane tasks – well, mostly. Years ago, one of my part time gigs was at a print shop. We used to run large format printers to produce assignment briefs, reference materials, handouts etc. for college professors to share with their students in class. Some of the orders were 200 copies with 10-15 pages per set. Each one used different coloured paper that was manually collated and then stapled together. Everyone in the shop hated collating. Everyone except me. I looked forward to these jobs. They helped me gather ideas for my upcoming assignments in design classes. The thing with collating was – once you’d figured out the order in which each paper needed to be piled, it was practically a robotic job. While my hands were busy stacking paper, the brain was free to wander around and gather steam for the ideas brewing in my head. Since then, doing boring chores became one of my go-to exercises for ideation. My current favourite being folding laundry. The mechanics of sorting clothes, working through the creases, and folding away each garment into its individual pile is fascinating for me. Not to mention rewarding. > It allows my eyes to be fully absorbed away from the constant distraction of the phone. > It allows me to deep dive into my brain and spend time focusing on mindful solutions. > It allows time for pre-seeded ideas to germinate and bloom into fully developed concepts. For example, this post is a direct result of engaging in my weekly laundry folding exercise. One minute I was organising heaps of messy textile, and the next - transcribing my thoughts onto paper to see this idea come alive! What are some of your favourite ideation techniques? Designers often need to be ready with fresh thinking and new design directions pretty quickly. I often employ a technique, which has become a habit, of merging 2 thoughts or styles. You could call it a parody. This was born from my days printing Kingsfunk apparel to be sold at edm clubs. Those opportunities have faded, but what endured was the thinking that could help you get beyond a dead end in your designing and inspire new work. This design below may become a t-shirt. Idk. We’ll see. But if you can guess, it’s inspired by 2 of my favorite cultural obsessions. The local boys of summer and the title design for the boys of a dystopian future.
