CCU Events | Our Secretary General Moderated a Panel at the Global Steel Sustainability Summit 2024 This morning, our Secretary General Anastasios Perimenis moderated Panel One 'Carbon Capture and Utilization: Developing Tomorrow’s Technology for Steel Industry' at the Global Steel Sustainability Summit 2024 in Hamburg, Germany. The panel was composed of Soledad van Eijk, Business Developer at TNO, Marian Flores Granobles, Ph.D., at ArcelorMittal, and Burçin Temel McKenna, Global Head of Carbon Capture Competency Center at Ramboll. The session began with a presentation on the INITIATE project in which ArcelorMittal, CO₂ Value Europe, and TNO are partners. The discussion explored: the business case for the Sorption Enhanced Water Gas Shift (SEWGS) concept in the steel sector; positioning SEWGS in transitioning to more sustainable steel manufacturing including the furthering of Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) concepts for the steel sector; and the integration of CCU for other hard-to-abate sectors. Realising the ultimate transition of steel production will require a concerted effort from all stakeholders including governments, associations, solution providers, steel makers and the support of emerging technologies that aims at improving sustainability across the entire steel industry value chain. Building a greener steel world is a long-term investment that will yield enormous economic and environmental benefits over the full life cycle of green steel. CO₂ Value Europe is proudly part of the INITIATE consortium as the WP7 leader in communication and dissemination. The INITIATE project, funded by the #Horizon2020 EU program, will advance the implementation of circular economy, industrial symbiosis, and CCU by re-using residual steel gases as a resource for the cross-sectorial, more efficient, and less wasteful manufacture of urea, at a significantly reduced carbon footprint. NGen Launches $100 Million Sustainable Manufacturing Challenge NGen Canada has launched a new call for project proposals for its Sustainable Manufacturing Challenge. These Projects will aim to accelerate the application of Canadian cleantech and other advanced technologies to improve the environmental sustainability of Canadian manufacturing. NGen will invest up to $35 million of Global Innovation Cluster funding and will raise more than $65 million from industry in launching $100 million in new collaborative projects. The Sustainable Manufacturing Challenge is seeking projects that will support Canada’s path to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions and target challenges like emissions reduction. Projects must be collaborative and transformative, promising to push the boundaries of advanced manufacturing technology and world-class cleantech. Projects should pursue one or more of the following objectives: > Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions > Reduction of energy usage and natural resource consumption > Operational efficiency gains > Waste reduction > Use of recycled and sustainable materials > Full life cycle product management and closed loop manufacturing > Circular manufacturing of materials https://lnkd.in/gaHH2w5b

The Steelex 2024 conference, organized by AIIFA (now the "AIIFA Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association"), focused on "Green Revolution in Steel – Sustainable Innovations." This event brought together key players from India’s secondary steel sector to discuss sustainability with government officials, including Union Minister for Heavy Industries, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, & Minister of State, Shri Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, both of whom affirmed the government’s support for green steel initiatives & climate action. Across 2 days, the industry outlined 5 crucial demands: Defining Green Steel: Establishing clear definitions to promote sustainability. Recycling as Raw Material: Encouraging recycling for consistent raw material supply. Green Steel in Govt Projects: Mandating 20% green steel in public projects. Steel Clusters as Hubs: Positioning clusters as key production hubs. Tackling Carbon Emissions: Targeting power generation as a key source of emissions. The sector, relying heavily on scrap metal, was recognized for its lower carbon emissions, nearing international benchmarks. While the global average is 1.6 tCO2 per ton of crude steel, India’s average is 2.54, but secondary steel plants are performing better due to recycling. To further reduce emissions, key action points are: Scaling up Low Carbon Technologies (LCTs) - could cut energy use & GHG emissions by 30-45%. An investment of Rs 30-50 lakh could achieve a 1000 tCO2 annual reduction, more cost-effective than solar power Collaborate with International R&D: Drawing inspiration from Sweden's green hydrogen-powered net-zero steel mill & Germany’s solar furnace, India can adopt Best Available Technologies Improve Logistics: Transitioning to rail & waterways could lower costs & emissions, as transport currently contributes 16% of production costs. Assessing Emissions: The industry can evaluate Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions to craft precise climate strategies Preparing for Global Regulations: With net-zero goals & EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on the horizon, small-scale mills need to adapt Upskilling Personnel: There’s a significant need to train plant workers in adopting LCTs A notable shift was the active involvement of young, second-generation steel mill owners. They led discussions, presented demands, and directly engaged with stakeholders. Their white paper, "Decarbonization Imperative: Transforming the Indian Steel Industry," demonstrated their leadership in driving innovation in green steel The conference, attended by over 2000 participants, reflected AIIFA’s growth, with its membership rising to 1500, representing nearly half of the secondary steel industry. The renaming of AIIFA underscores its commitment to sustainable practices. Steelex 2024 marked a pivotal step in decarbonizing India’s steel industry, with young leaders and LCTs playing essential roles in shaping the future. My best wishes to Yogesh Mandani and Kamal Aggarwal, President and Secy Gen. of AIIFA.

Glass, a versatile and fully recyclable material, plays a crucial role in environmental sustainability. Unlike plastics, glass can be endlessly recycled without loss of quality, reducing the need for raw materials and lowering carbon emissions. Its inert nature means it doesn't leach chemicals, making it safer for food and beverage storage. Innovations in glass production, such as using recycled glass (cullet), further enhance its eco-friendly profile by cutting energy consumption and reducing waste. Looking ahead, the future of glass in promoting a friendly environment is promising. Advances in manufacturing techniques and increased use of renewable energy in production are set to make glass even more sustainable. Researchers are exploring ways to make glass production carbon-neutral and to enhance its applications in energy-efficient buildings and renewable energy technologies, such as solar panels. As global emphasis on sustainability grows, glass is poised to play an increasingly significant role in fostering a greener planet.

Great to see Australian innovation tackling such big sectors and big impact problems. The team at PlasmaLeap Technologies, along with leading academics, has been working to decarbonise a number of chemical production methods. This is a critical part of reaching net zero by 2050, given the substantial share of global GHG emissions made up by chemical production and usage. Sustainable, with zero emissions and also cost effective - this is what customers need to support new technology at scale. Sustainable aviation fuel is one example. https://lnkd.in/gUCRiiRQ
