COADY Architects is delighted to announce our participation in the Education Building Ireland Conference, taking place on November 6-7 at the RDS Dublin. Donal O'Donohue, Director, and Conor Morrissey, Associate, will present on Stage 2 at 1 PM on November 6, addressing the topic “Urban Schools for Special Education Needs.” During our talk, we will share our design philosophy for educational facilities, with a particular focus on urban schools. Through various examples of our special school designs, we will demonstrate how we leverage context and neighbourhood characteristics as valuable amenities. Our approach places both staff and students at the centre of our projects, fostering inspiring learning environments. In recent years, we have seen several adaptive reuse projects for higher education facilities. These types of projects were common in the hospitality, mixed-use, and residential markets in the past. Whether the impetus is preserving a historic building or saving on construction costs; it has been proven that older buildings can be repurposed to provide modern, interesting, and technologically advanced educational spaces for campuses. Read our blog Adaptive Reuse in Higher Education to see how three large Universities are reimagining existing spaces for the benefit of students and their learning: https://lnkd.in/eV4UkStt

Our proposal for the redevelopment of the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise’s (CAFRE) Greenmount Campus outside Antrim has received planning approval. The campus redevelopment consists of the phased delivery of three buildings that encompass exemplary environmental and energy efficiency credentials: Student Accommodation, Teaching Building and Central Hub. The scheme will be one of the most sustainable campuses in the UK and Ireland, utilising leading building design principles and renewable energy technologies. The Central Hub building provides a welcoming reception, conference centre, staff offices and central dining hall. The 200-bed Student Accommodation building includes residents’ leisure and social spaces. The Teaching Building hosts a range of educational facilities to accommodate CAFRE’s agriculture and horticulture programmes. Read more on these plans here: https://lnkd.in/eMEfMjz3

Our Policy Lead, Stephen Caulfield, was in Glasgow yesterday for #LearningPlacesScotland 2024. This conference and exhibition brings together learners, educators, designers, consultants, and manufacturers for discussion and collaboration on how we deliver high-quality learning spaces for all. Though there is much work still to be done, we are encouraged by the growing recognition of the role that school and college estate design has on the experiences of people with Additional Support Needs (ASN) - and how trends towards expansive, open-plan (and noisy) spaces is negatively impacting the experiences of people with differences in sensory profile and social communication.
