Virgin Atlantic Airways "Take us for all we've got." Richard Branson, enamored with Freddy Laker, got the urge to start an #airline as a hobby. Just for fun, he decided to take on People's Express which dominated the #budget segment. With fully integrated #marketing , Korey Kay (now The Advertising Company) introduced Virgin Atlantic as the first low-fare, full-frills airline. Less than two years after the launch, the U.S. and the U.K. bombed Muammar Gadaffi, and missed. Parents cancelled their kids' summer vacations to London and Virgin planes were flying practically empty. Faced with an airline disaster, Korey Kay recommended changing the target from "backpacks" to "briefcases," shifting from discretionary to must flyers. The airline once again took off. Virgin's business class increased from 11 to 76 seats and their profits soared. During our eleven-year tenure, Virgin expanded to seven major markets and maintained the highest transatlantic load factors of any airline. Revenues grew at an average annual rate of 36% for nine years. Richard Branson sold his mainstay, Virgin Record, for $1 billion and put the money into expanding the airline. It was no longer a hobby. When we started Virgin Records, we wanted to beat the bigger labels to signing the most exciting bands, because we were more nimble, more attuned to what artists wanted, and more willing to take risks. When we launched Virgin Atlantic to take on British Airways, we wanted to create a flying experience people loved, rather than endured. We strived to fix everything about aviation people hated and introduce things that would make them smile, and we’ve carried this ethos on with every Virgin company we’ve launched since.
