Let's celebrate Disability Pride Month! I'm proud of my disability identity and the journey learning to live with (and embrace) my deafness has taken me on. It's a continuous learning process: some days I am confident about who I am, other days I wobble. Disability Pride Month, celebrated every July to mark the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, provides an opportunity for disabled people to take up space and share experiences - a way for nondisabled and disabled alike to learn and grow. I'm a passionate advocate for equity and inclusion in society. As a nondisabled people I didn't take enough time to learn more about disability, amplify disabled voices, or take concrete action to support my community. That is one of many learnings that I have had over the last two years. Created in 2019 by Ann Magill, and updated in 2021 to be more inclusive, the Disability Pride Flag signifies a different group of disabilities for each colour: Red - physical Gold - neurodiversity White/Pale Grey - invisible or undiagnosed Blue - mental health Green - sensory (including blindness & deafness) Not sure how you can celebrate? Here are some easy ways to get involved: 1. Follow disabled creators, voices, and advocates - show your support and tag them or share this post. 2. Talk to your children about what Disability Pride means: https://lnkd.in/eeq6nsSm 3. Watch film/TV made by disabled people and with disabled people as actors (https://lnkd.in/e77vrrRk) 4. Make your content more accessible - find out how here: https://lnkd.in/eWZtiE-p #DisabilityPride #DisabilityPrideMonth #Disability #AreYouListening

Historic EU Agreement: New Disability Cards to Enhance Mobility and Access The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament celebrate a landmark EU law improving the lives of over 100 million people with disabilities. This new legislation introduces a European disability card and upgrades the European parking card, easing mobility and access across Europe. João Albuquerque, S&D negotiator, stated: “This historic moment grants equal access to special conditions, benefits, and discounts across Europe. The cards will ease public transport use and access to museums, sports centres, and parking. They also ensure better access to information in accessible formats, including digital, sign language, and braille. A new disability card will be free of charge with centralised information on services.” This agreement marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and accessible Europe. Robert Flowers, Author of "The Joy of Helping Others: Creating Passive Income Streams Through Special Needs Housing", currently Assisting Real Estate Investors Achieve Maximum ROI Through Shared Independent Housing
🏘️ Insights into Independent Living for People with Disabilities 🙌 As an industry expert in Special Needs Housing, I found the recent article "Independent Living for People with Disabilities" to be a thought-provoking piece that sheds light on the challenges and opportunities in our field. The article highlights the significant barriers individuals with disabilities face when seeking independent living, such as the lack of accessible housing and limited financial resources. This aligns with the current industry trend of increasing demand for affordable, adaptable housing solutions. One notable point is the emphasis on home ownership as a more viable option for individuals with disabilities compared to the rental market. This underscores the need for our industry to focus on creating more accessible housing stock and providing support for home modifications. The article also explores various community-based options, such as in-home caregivers and Medicaid-supported services, which play a crucial role in enabling individuals with disabilities to maintain their autonomy. As industry professionals, we must advocate for the expansion and improvement of these services to meet the growing demand. Furthermore, the mention of federal law protecting the right of individuals with disabilities to live in their communities highlights the legal framework we operate within. However, the lengthy waiting lists for Medicaid-supported services in many states underscore the need for systemic changes and increased funding. This article serves as a reminder of the critical work we do in the Special Needs Housing industry. It is our responsibility to innovate, collaborate, and push for policies that break down barriers and create more inclusive, accessible communities. I encourage my fellow industry professionals to share their thoughts and experiences on this topic. By engaging in meaningful discussions, we can identify best practices, forge partnerships, and drive the change needed to ensure everyone has access to the housing and support they need to thrive. Let's continue to be advocates for independent living and work towards a future where individuals with disabilities have the opportunity to live life on their own terms. 💪 #SpecialNeedsHousing #IndependentLiving #Accessibility #CommunityInclusion

🗓️ July is Disability Pride Month! Originating in the United States after the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act on July 26, 1990, Disability Pride Month is now celebrated worldwide. 🌍 The annual celebrations aim to raise awareness while amplifying the voices and promoting the visibility of persons with disabilities. It’s so important that we do this because so many of us are affected by a disability of some kind. 📊 According to the 2022 Canadian Survey on Disability (CSD), 27% of Canadians aged 15 years and older, had one or more disabilities that limited them in their daily activities. The survey also found that the disability rate in Canada has increased by 5 percentage points since 2017. 🔎To learn more about the survey’s findings, please visit https://lnkd.in/e9iBbUmC. 🔎To learn about the rights of people with disabilities, please visit https://lnkd.in/eGNAawTW To help spread the word about Disability Pride Month, use #disabilitypridemonth. On Monday 14 October, the European Council adopted two directives establishing the European parking card for persons with disabilities and the European Disability Card, facilitating travel and short stays throughout the European Union for persons with disabilities. Autism-Europe welcomes this important step before the implementation of the cards at a national level. Member states will have two and a half years to adapt their national legislation and three and a half years to apply the measures. National authorities will be responsible for issuing the cards m, that will be recognised throughout the EU as proof of disability or entitlement to specific services based on a disability. The cards will ensure equal access to special conditions or preferential treatment for persons with disabilities during short stays throughout the EU. “Having a Disability Card recognised everywhere across the EU is a great support to freedom of movement. It makes it so much easier to prove our invisible disability without having to explain.” – Member of Autism-Europe Alongside, the European Disability Forum we will now support an ambitious implementation at a national level, in particular to minimise exceptions to the scope of the cards and continue advocating for all autistic people to be eligible for disability status in their respective countries so that they can access the European Disability Card. #AutismNotInvisible

To tackle ableism, it's crucial to listen to and amplify the voices of people with disabilities. Their experiences and perspectives matter. Let's be empathetic, challenge assumptions, and support one another. #C4DP #disabilitypride #disability #disabled #inclusion
