Wales has been named the second best country in the world for recycling and is within touching distance of the top spot, new analysis shows. Wales is listed just behind Austria in the global rankings, with both countries managing to recycle 59% of their waste. Northern Ireland is ranked ninth, England 11th and Scotland 15th among the 48 countries included in the comparison. Wales has put a particular focus on improving recycling rates in recent decades - with statutory targets for local councils and all homes asked to separate out their food waste among a number of initiatives. Some councils have moved to only picking up general waste at the kerbside once a month, with Denbighshire being the latest - introducing four weekly collections for black bags in June. The Welsh government puts the average recycling rate in Wales at 66%, external - this is based on municipal waste collected by local authorities from households and some businesses. It varies from 59% in Torfaen to 72% in Pembrokeshire and Swansea. To compile a global league table, researchers used a country's reported recycling rate and other waste data to try and rank different nations' efforts on a like-for-like basis. The report, by Eunomia Research and Consulting and Reloop, examined the performance of 48 countries, including the world's largest economies. “One of the Resource Recovery Group’s projects is to advocate for enhanced packaging design controls and extended producer responsibility. By promoting change in how our goods are packaged, we can increase the amount of packaging that can be taken back by industry and made into new items to contribute to the circular economy   “The alternative to this is no change, and an increasing number of plastics and other materials used in consumer goods not being recycled and sent to landfill.   “It must be our priority to learn from the custodians of the land, the First Nations peoples, so that we can better care for the land, protect the land, and cherish the land.   “Not taking an opportunity to reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill is the opposite of caring, protecting, and cherishing.   “Western Australians are heading together towards Net-Zero 2050 and ‘Now More Than Ever’ is there an importance of connecting, respecting and learning from Indigenous cultures on how to care for the land for all our future.”   -The Chair of Resource Recovery Group, Cr.Karen Wheatland is an ally for Reconciliation Week and advocates in her personal and professional life for the theme of this year’s National Reconciliation Week- ‘Now More Than Ever’. Councillor Wheatland stands on two parts of the Whadjuk land that Resource Recovery Group’s Canning Vale Centre operates on. One half is the nature reserve and the other half the recovered materials Bale Shed.   The connection between nature and conserving the resources we have through recycling is a positive reminder about the cultural significance that Indigenous peoples of Australia place on caring for country, the importance of working together, and of connection. Reconciliation is a time for all Australians to learn and be educated about Indigenous culture and their history of 60,000 years of sustainable existence.  

Tackling 10,000+ Battery-Related Fires a Year: How Resource Recovery Australia's Mobile Community Recycling Service is Making a Difference Sobering statistics reported by Australian Council of Recycling (ACOR) and Waste Contractors and Recyclers Association NSW & ACT (WCRA) reveal that in the past 12 months, Australia has experienced a staggering 10,000 to 12,000 battery-related fires. To combat this growing issue, a joint partnership with Resource Recovery Australia's (RRA) Mobile Community Recycling Service and the proactive Local City Councils from Cumberland City Council City of Parramatta and Blacktown City Council are working to keep their residents and workforce safe. This innovative service helps residents safely dispose of problem waste, including batteries, directly from their homes. Residents simply need to book a free pickup at www.problemwaste.com.au and the Mobile Community Recycling Service truck will visit their homes to collect batteries and other problem wastes such as paint, gas and helium party balloon bottles, engine and cooking oil, fire extinguishers, and e-waste. The service is making a huge impact. Last year, the Mobile Community Recycling Service collected over 192 Tonnes of problem waste from over 6,000 residents, significantly reducing the risk of fires and promoting a healthier environment for residents in Western Sydney. Together with Cumberland, Parramatta and Blacktown City Councils, we’re not only providing a crucial service but also educating the community about responsible waste disposal. Our efforts are making recycling an easy part of everyday life, leading to higher recycling rates, less contamination, and reduced fire risk.

I’m a big believer in advocating for sustainable practices in our industries. It’s so important for producers, companies, and manufacturers to think about the end-of-life for their packaging and products. We need to ensure these items don’t end up in landfill. By focusing on creating products that fit into the circular economy or can be recycled and reused, we can seriously cut down on waste and emissions. This is a crucial step toward hitting net zero by 2050. I recently moved a motion for fully funded mandatory product stewardship programs that the City of Melville is taking to the Australian Local Government Association General Assembly. Together, we can make a real difference for our environment and build a sustainable future for everyone.
