February is Black History Month, a celebration of cultural contributions, diversity and the bountiful food and traditions that African Americans have contributed. Starting in 1976, this month recognizes and celebrates the Black voices that have played pivotal roles in shaping our shared history. According to refed.org, a “remarkable thing about this food history is how it sprang from enterprise, creativity, survival, and necessity. Innovation in Black food culture came from scarcity and being unjustly forced into hardship and food insecurity. Creating recipes using scraps, leftovers, and ingredients that were otherwise deemed as ‘less than,’ African American culture set the standard for creating delicious and wholesome meals from very little, and they are meals that we still enjoy today. From cornbread to gumbo, mac and cheese to fried chicken, it is a culinary legacy that is deeply ingrained in the American cultural profile." As we celebrate Black history, we continuously work to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion in our nutrition and health research endeavors. Recognizing and honoring diverse perspectives is key to creating meaningful impacts in our areas of focus. #BlackHistoryMonth

B&Q put in a huge amount of work to create a diverse and inclusive workplace, and having open and honest conversations is a huge part of that. During Black History Month, we hosted a sofa chat discussion to talk about the progress B&Q has made and the work that needs to be done. I caught up with some of the audience and panelists, and captured the highlights. Check out the video I made below!
In the spirit of looking back at some of the truly wonderful moments we've had at B&Q, today we reflect on Black History Month. In October we talked about the importance of Black History Month and what it means to some of our colleagues and we celebrated with 'Carnival lunches'. We looked at the importance of Allyship and what it means to be a good ally. Most memorably we listened and learnt, by holding our first Black History Month sofa chat. We've taken big steps forward in 2023, and we're excited for 2024. #BlackHistoryMonth #BelongAtBandQ

This month, ParcelShield Holdings, LLC is thrilled to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing and paying tribute to African Americans' remarkable contributions and achievements throughout history. We are honored to have Reese McCoy share her cultural traditions and insights on the significance of ParcelShield celebrating Black History Month means to her. • If you could pick a personal motto, what would it be? I came across a saying I have now incorporated into my daily routine. “Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a part of it.” • What African American traditions or customs do you incorporate in your life? My family celebrates Juneteenth as our Freedom Day with a giant party every year. It is the day that the last of the enslaved African Americans who were on the front lines in Texas were told they were free. We celebrate as a reminder of what our ancestors came through and the achievements we have made in our culture throughout the generations. We gather to share a meal, listen to music, and light fireworks for the kids. • What does it mean to you that ParcelShield celebrates Black History Month? Celebrating Black History Month at ParcelShield is exciting for me. It brings a feeling of inclusivity that I have not necessarily felt with other employers. Knowing that my company is interested in my heritage makes me feel more human in my role. I love that ParcelShield is cultivating a culture of diversity and Inclusivity in this industry. #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityandInclusion #ParcelShield

Black excellence fatigue is a real problem. Celebrating the achievements of fellow Black colleagues is vital. We must recognize their accomplishments and highlight the value they bring to the table. Yet, let's not overlook the other side of the coin: the potential for exhaustion and harm. The constant need to prove oneself, to be celebrated for diversity rather than merit, can be draining. It can feel like the focus is more on the color of their skin than on their hard-earned achievements. This paradoxical situation can create an environment where Blacks feel tokenized rather than genuinely valued. The key is balance. We should celebrate achievements because they are remarkable, not because they are from a Black colleague.
