Our Duncan was our man on the ground at yesterday's Institute of Internal Communication conference in Manchester.
We asked him what his top three takeaways from the day were:
1. Give your employees autonomy. janet leighton Director of Happiness, Timpsons Limited explained how they operate an ‘Upside Down’ Management structure so all their retail colleagues have licence to run the retail outlets in the want as long as it leads to strong customer service. And to know they have the full support of the rest of the business.
2. Capture the diversity of voice. Ian MacArthur, Director Good Employment Charter talked about the importance of accommodating diverse working styles and the needs of different generational types.
3. Constantly ask yourself: ‘What’s the point in doing this activity or piece of communication?’ Northern Trains, Luke Pearce CIIC, Employee Experience Manager reminded us that understanding the status quo through data and research is easy but ‘Taking it, communicating and acting on it is the hard bit. What happens next is the real crunch.’

A big thank you Rosemarie Corrigan FRQA FRSB as chair and Joanne Donald, FRQA and Fabrizio Maniglio who co-presented with me this week, and to the Research Quality Association (RQA) team for organizing and hosting such a high-information-density session on "AI and QA – What Are the Essentials?"
The session was a deep dive into the role of AI in pharmaceutical quality assurance, covering topics like:
- Practical applications of AI in clinical trials and QA processes, including predictive modeling, NLP, and decision support systems.
- The evolving regulatory landscape with insights into the EU AI Act, FDA guidance, and EMA reflection paper.
- Governance frameworks and the challenges of implementing AI responsibly while maintaining compliance with GxP principles.
Here are a few standout quotes from the session:
- “AI isn’t here to replace us; it’s here to augment our intelligence and make processes smarter and more efficient.” – Hans de Raad
- “Even low-risk applications under R&D exemptions must demonstrate fitness for purpose (under the EU AI Act) and comply with rigorous validation standards.”– Joanne Donald
- “Governance must be adaptive, not static, to meet the rapid advancements in AI technologies.” – Fabrizio Maniglio
A major highlight was the audience engagement through thought-provoking polls and Q&A, with key takeaways like:
- The strong potential of NLP and machine learning in transforming QA processes.
- The importance of maintaining human oversight to prevent over-reliance on AI systems.
- An overwhelming interest in forming a dedicated AI Special Interest Group (SIG) within the RQA to foster collaboration, share best practices, and keep members ahead of the curve in this fast-evolving field.
Looking forward, the development of the RQA AI SIG is an exciting step forward. It’s a platform where we can continue to explore the intersection of AI, quality assurance, and compliance, ensuring that RQA members remain thought leaders in this space.
Thank you again to everyone who participated and contributed to this conversation. The future of AI in QA is here, and I’m thrilled to be part of shaping it with such an engaged community.

I was asked by Heimann Cvetkovic & Partners what I looked forward to most at the CMMA National Conference. Easy, networking and continuing education.
CMMA’s most valued benefit of membership is our National Conference.
I hate to say it, but the content is a close second. Making or renewing those in-person connections really has tangible results. Whether it’s benchmarking, comparing vendors, getting opinions on how to overcome business challenges, or easily making a friend at the conference, you grow to look forward to seeing each year. It’s nice to be able to send an email or call someone else who works in our nitch knowing that they’ll pick up or reply. It’s all about the relationships built here at the National Conference.
The content will be outstanding too. The keynote presentation will feature cutting-edge strategies to increase retention and loyalty within your organization and essential business principles to help you create a company culture that keeps employees engaged and customers returning for more. I am even leading a panel of experts where we will explore the end-to-end flow of in-person and hybrid communications, from production to distribution in an enterprise environment.
There is so much more happening at the CMMA National Conference, like Leadership and technology forums, presentations on Managing AI in the Creative Environment and Building a Culture of Belonging, and studio tours. And don’t forget the many networking and social events that are included.
Just a reminder that early bird pricing ends August 31st so if you’re on the fence, jump in and join CMMA at Best Buy’s and Toro’s corporate headquarters in October. You don’t even have to be a member to attend. See you there…

“The Upgrade”
Tonight -- about a couple of hours or so after my arrival, many of my apps self-upgraded, including Telegram and WhatsApp but perhaps not WeChat. I couldn't tell but it looks like perhaps all of my Google apps have also upgraded. Maybe they are doing this favor to all those who attended NeurIPS 2024 in Vancouver. The apps seem to work just as well so far. For one thing, on WhatsApp, one can now edit one's messages directly. Something like recall and edit on WeChat, or a similar feature on Telegram, which were around for so many years.
This was missing in my earlier version of WhatsApp.
Last night, we went to Victoria Chinese Restaurant near Vancouver Fairmont. I thought the dinner was very good... Thank you to all the colleagues who attended, and all the hard work, walking the floors....NeurIPS, like CVPR, is a scene. The emphasis seems to be leaning back towards more theory but there were still plenty of unique problems, datasets and benchmarks introduced in a variety of domains, some new lines of research and architectural proposals, with the new Austrian company NXAI making high but economically attractive suggestions with their debut of their xLSTM series—the intentions and reasons for which are all good.
The future, however, remains as always unknown except, perhaps, in certain drastically idealized world or worlds.
And then we had the horrible speaking-to-one’s-own-bubble fiasco of the last keynote….
It was exactly the one I had decided not to attend.
