“There’s no way around it: to realize the full benefit of the nation’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2035, we need to more than double our grid capacity,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. The DOE’s National Transmission Needs Study, released October 30, 2023, estimates that by 2035 the United States must more than double existing regional transmission capacity and expand existing interregional transmission capacity by more than fivefold to maintain reliability, improve resilience to extreme weather and other disruptive events, relieve congestion, and provide access to low-cost clean energy. Data centres are amongst the planet's heaviest consumers of electricity. They MUST get that consumption down in 2024. But can they? And will they? Our predictions in our recent short article show some optimism on this front. We've worked with data centres to help them sensibly reduce their backup power supply load (UPS), and to use more efficient cooling methods. This has significantly reduced how much electricity they use (and pay for), and the burden they place on the environment. There can be no transition without transmission. #Grid bottlenecks are a global challenge for the #energytransition that are rightly gaining more attention from investors, utilities, policymakers, and others. Governments and utilities have the herculean task of adding or replacing virtually ALL of the world's power #grids by 2040 to ensure reliable #electricity and meet international carbon emissions reduction targets in the #powersector, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). This entails upgrading about 80 million kilometers (almost 50 million miles) of infrastructure. ▶ The main bottlenecks in today’s grids fall into 3 categories – physical infrastructure, grid mechanics, and services, discussed in a helpful Jefferies article: https://bit.ly/3VHSi0M. Physical infrastructure is “far and away, the biggest hurdle for grids.” The #energytransition and associated load growth will necessitate significant expansion and modernization of the physical grid #infrastructure. ▶ A TransitionZero study found that building grids could save nearly $3 trillion in the #netzero transition. Reinforcing #transmission lines both within and between countries reduces the amount of expensive generation and #storage infrastructure needed, saving the global economy trillions in #transition costs: https://bit.ly/3Vj9fNv. Outdated #electricity grids are constraining the transition to cleaner energy, in #Asia and beyond. Why? Because existing #grids are inadequate due to the intermittency of #renewables, and new projects are often distant from traditional load centers. Climate Smart Ventures with a consortium of partners recently provided recommendations on #grid and #infrastructure upgrades that are needed to support a just #energytransition in the Philippines: https://bit.ly/4dozE4u. The consortium found that in addition to more rapid #transmission deployment, the introduction of faster types of ancillary services and inertia support are crucial to support higher #renewableenergy share in power generation. According to Canary Media Inc., in the next decade, the U.S. transmission grid needs to double or triple in size to support rapid decarbonization. To achieve the Biden Administration’s goal of a zero-carbon grid by 2035, it's predicted that 75,000 miles of new high-voltage lines will be needed – that's enough to stretch from Los Angeles to New York City and back 15 times! Federal action could play a key role in accelerating this growth, making 2024 a crucial year for major grid reforms. With 36 high-voltage transmission projects ready to start, state utility regulators and regional grid operators could become pivotal players in this expansion. Pro-transmission groups are advocating for federal bills to expand authority over transmission.
