About us

At Eurelectric, we envision a future where the European power sector has a net positive impact on the environment and climate in a carbon-neutral world. To make that happen, we are on a mission to lead Europe’s energy transition with clean and renewable electricity How? We work with around 1,500 industry experts to cover all the major trends and developments in our sector - from markets to energy policy, environment & sustainable development, retail customers or networks. Our policy positions, developed with our members, are brought to policymakers and adjacent sectors by our team and members, providing effective representation in public affairs. In our work, we value above all societal engagement, climate leadership, and transparency: - Societal engagement is achieved through championing electrification. It creates jobs, improves air quality, provides customer convenience and reduces our dependence on imported fuels - Climate leadership is demonstrated through commitments, innovation and proactiveness in driving the decarbonisation and electrification agendas at the local, regional, national, and European levels - Transparency is maintained by reporting our papers and letters in our advocacy meetings register, as well as being a signatory of the EU Transparency Register Consensus building is central to our work as we seek to lead the charge on Europe’s decarbonisation agenda. Our regular meetings with the members enable discussions both on technical and strategic levels, aiming to address current sectoral issues and the long-term evolution of our sector. Their country-specific viewpoints and discussions inform our policy recommendations, position papers and studies. These exchanges are extremely valuable as they lead to the development of solid and factual evidence, which is essential when engaging with policymakers on the latest proposals on the EU agenda or setting the trend for future transformations. That’s Eurelectric: leading the energy transition⚡

🚨 50% Emissions Cut! The power sector has halved its emissions since 2008, according to today's newly released Power Barometer: https://bit.ly/3N6Sf9s This marks the largest emissions reduction to date. Yet, the climate clock is ticking faster. Europe’s #electrification rate has stagnated at 23% over the past decade - well short of the 50% target set for 2040. Another concern for the sector is the growing price volatility, with electricity prices occasionally dropping below zero (mostly during solar peaks). This makes it harder to build a strong business case for further renewable investments. Given these trends, Eurelectric calls on policymakers to: 1 - Implement the #GreenDeal 2 - Maintain a market-compatible investment framework 3 - Establish a clear electrification strategy for a competitive, decarbonised European industry. “The missing piece between going green and staying competitive is electrifying. Industrial sectors hold a huge potential to electrify further based on available technologies”, said Eurelectric’s Secretary General Kristian Ruby Explore the #PowerBarometer24 for an in-depth look at the state of Europe’s energy transition: https://bit.ly/3N6Sf9s European Commission | Niels Fuglsang | European Parliament | Sam Peacock | SSE plc | Stefan Håkansson | GFG Alliance | #energy #electricity #electrification #decarbonisation

During today's European Council, leaders will take stock of progress on enhancing EU competitiveness, based on Mario Draghi's report ‘The future of European competitiveness’. Here are our views 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVNCPWs3 Overall, we welcome Draghi's report, which highlights #electrification and expansion of the #electricity system as the way forward. However, bolstering energy-cost competitiveness of energy-intensive industries while sustaining continued investments in the power sector will require a balanced and carefully crafted approach. In our letter, we call on EU energy leaders to deliberate following these principles: 1. The power sector and the industrial base must grow together 2. Electrification of demand must grow in tandem with supply 3. Be aware of the unwanted trade-offs in short-term measures Read the full letter 👉 https://lnkd.in/eVNCPWs3 Leo Birnbaum | Kristian Ruby | Cillian O'Donoghue | E.ON #energy #energytransition #industry #industrialcompetitiveness #draghireport

The success of Europe’s #energy and #decarbonisation objectives hinges on a competitive green industry. Here's how to achieve it 👉 https://lnkd.in/eWBYKjAu Here are 5 key points that policymakers should consider for the European Union’s upcoming Clean Industrial Deal: 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱, 𝗻𝗲𝘁-𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲. Regulatory certainty, accelerating permitting, simplification of administrative procedures and long-term visibility along with a conducive investment framework are paramount for the cost-efficient deployment of a technologies that will help the power sector reach net-zero around 2040. 2. 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝘂𝗽 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Electrification rates have stagnated at 33% for industrial sectors, but promising solutions exist, leading to a technical potential of 92% direct electrification of industrial heat processes. Cost and regulatory barriers prevent this from happening at the scale needed. 3. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮. Expanding the EU’s clean tech base will be crucial for the bloc’s climate and industrial leadership, while also speeding up the EU’s push for energy independence. For that, European companies need to see a reversal of their disadvantage vis-à-vis international competitors which benefit from unfairly, heavily subsidised markets and are subject to weaker compliance on environment, sustainability and governance (ESG) standards. 4. 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗮𝘅𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆. While wholesale electricity prices are decreasing, on the retail end, unfair taxes and levies are exacerbating the competitiveness gap with international competitors. At present, electricity is taxed 1.4 times more than gas, a distortion given their respective environmental impacts. The revision of the European Taxation Directive should be an opportunity to address this issue. 5. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀. This will transfer the benefits of renewables faster to European industries and making energy prices less volatile. #energy #energytransition #electricity #electrification #decarbonisation
