DEI is more than just a buzzword in MOL! Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are important values that foster a respectful and productive work environment for people from different backgrounds and cultures. At MOL, we believe that unity comes from the unique abilities of every single individual, and the coherent force out of the strong sense of belonging among all members fosters organizational growth. We are proud that, in Hong Kong, we have a diverse team, with a good gender mix, from over 10 countries. DEI is more than just a buzzword. In August 2024, we celebrated DEI with a party. Our awareness of DEI was enhanced through DEI Bingo game, where key concept words (instead of numbers) were printed in different arrangements on cards. International food was served afterwards to bring people together and create a sense of connection. This is how we embark on our ongoing DEI journey. Promoting DEI in the office is not a one-time event or a checkbox to tick. It is an ongoing process that requires commitment and action from everyone. H&M shares -10% today. Hard to know if it’s down to weaker gross margin recovery in 4Q (+260bp) than expected, soft YTD trading (-4% cFX) or Helena stepping down. She did a good job restructuring systems and logistics, starting to churn the store park (1,132 gross closures over 4Y, net stores -14%), improving productivity and stabilising margins. The challenge for her successor is translating this stable, but low growth base, to meet the stated ambitions of doubling sales from 2021 to 2030, halving the carbon footprint and doubling EBIT margins to >10% this year. Even with falling input costs and flat pricing, this looks very demanding.

2024 - A Year of Change Next year looks like being a year of change politically, with an expected general election and the appointment of a new First Minister in Wales. Businesses are getting out their crystal ball trying to figure out the potential impact of these two events on their company's future prospects. Uncertainty can bring challenges and opportunities depending on what your business does and how well prepared you are. As someone with a vested interest in diaspora engagement, for economic development, I hope whoever is our next First Minister (FM) adopts the mindset that Wales is at least 6 million people, its just that 3 million, highly motivated & talented Welsh, live outside the borders of Wales. That's 3 million advocates for Wales that can have a profound effect on our country, its economy & global profile. GlobalWelsh has demonstrated the significant benefits of harnessing the power of the Welsh diaspora with many success stories that testify to its potential to help Wales build a stronger economy, inform policy and develop our presence on the world stage. As with any business (even not-for-profits) we strive to grow, do more and have greater impact. The political landscape can have a significant impact on if/how we scale, hence our plea to our new FM to put diaspora engagement as a strategic component of future economic development plans. We have shown that inward investment, international trade, mentoring and thought leadership are areas that our 3+ million advocates for Wales can and will support. Whatever challenges Wales faces in the future, engaging our diaspora in finding solutions and giving back can only be a positive thing, hence we need ask and engage them more in 2024 and beyond. https://lnkd.in/dAFkbwR
