FRESH OFF THE PRESS - SwedenBIO’s "Life Science Barometer 2024" is out - a snapshot of the Swedish Life Science industry is out with impressive facts & figures and an overview of the Nordic Life Science by numbers! Some of the impressive facts: ✅ A total of 4,000 Swedish life science companies of which 1/3 are public listed! ✅ Of the 4,000 companies 54% are located in the Stockholm/Uppsala region 21% (892) in the Swedish part of Medicon Valley and 16% around Göteborg. ✅ A big majority of Medtech companies 61% followed by Pharma of 31% and biotech of 19%. ✅ Without a doubt the focus and investment with growth, R&D and innovation calls for an increasing demand for talent. Other fresh figures are the Gender Balance in the Swedish life science industry – which the Swedes may not be proud of – but I as a Dane am impressed and applaud 👏 Of the 200 life science companies engaged in the survey, they had: ✅ 42% women in top management and ✅ 30% women in boards. VILDA - Ledande kvinnor i Life Science Women in Life Science Denmark When it comes to the Biopharma pipeline - the Nordics again punches above its our weight. The collective Nordic R&D drug pipeline has risen 50% over the last decade to more than 900 assets with Sweden being the largest contributor to the asset pipeline within the Nordics. Sweden has 130 separate companies with active drug development programs, with more than 400 drugs. Biologics and RNA therapies, rare diseases and immunology – these are all areas of notable investment. A legacy of neuroscience and cardiometabolic research continues as Nordic companies remain global leaders in the field. Even cell therapy, where the domestic pipeline is slightly under the 4% share, is rapidly becoming an area of strength with a 50% increase in the last year alone! Sweden and Denmark being the drivers within life science -  imagine what we could do – if we on stronghold or up-and-coming areas like the ATMP joint forces and maybe even dared to commit ourselves in our national life science strategies. What a fantastic second week at Cambridge Consultants! The highlight was attending BioIndustry Association (BIA) #TechBio in London with our Biotech team. The event showcased a range of exciting startups to large established players, supporting the future of healthcare and biotechnology innovations. There was strong presence of platform technologies which was great to see. It was great to attend the Engineering Biology track. Rebecca Godfrey PhD from ExpressionEdits presented compelling data on their intron-isation strategy, showing how biological syntax can overcome protein expression challenges, with potential applications in gene therapy. James MacDonald from Solena Materials Limited shared their synthetic protein fibre technology and early revenue progress, with scale-up efforts on the horizon. Zahra Jawad from CREASALLIS demonstrated how their patented tumour-penetrating technology addresses immunotherapy challenges by improving tumour penetration. IMU Biosciences Adam Laing highlighted how today's compute technology, combined with immune data, could help clinical care decision-making. Christopher Reynolds from Eden Bio Ltd showed how ML and compute could help address scale-up and strain optimization challenges. The multi-omics panel featuring Davide Gianni, Perman Jorayev, Ph.D., Richard Kuo, and Debora Lucarelli provided valuable insights. Key takeaways included the importance of asking the right questions to apply the right approaches, data reuse challenges (FAIR data was a missed opportunity), and the power of multi-omics for a high-dimensional disease snapshot. The need for secure access to clinical trial data remains a critical area for government support. It was exciting to see Sergei Yakneen from Isomorphic Labs present. At the end he emphasised the need for data that is not available to us yet to model organisms to make leaps in drug development. I personally synthesised this as requiring organism-level high dimensional data e.g. an organism "digital twin" to help revolutionize our understanding of the drug response. To me, it is clear that Cambridge Consultants can help accelerate the development cycles of several technologies discussed during the event and provide valuable business insights that innovators are looking to capture. We can play a key role in addressing the capital efficiency risks faced by innovators, whether first-time founders or established businesses trying to break new ground.
