To add some additional enticement (I hope), Jim D'Aloisio and I are presenting on embodied carbon in practice - the 4 materials revealed to be most impactful, the magnitude of impact they have in the industry and on this planet, and some immediate steps to use to reduce the burden in your work.

The Kendeda Building: Part 3 - Take the tour! I hope you have enjoyed our three part series on this incredible building. The value of these cutting edge projects to me is more than showcasing best practices and offering lesson's learned. They are the shining beacon of what success looks like when the whole is truly greater than the sum of the parts. We are in the middle of transforming our built environment to be regenerative. Most of the buildings we are building and renovating now are both better than where we have come from and not as good as where we want to go. We have to embrace that messiness as we continue the transformation and keep perspective that the mid-way efforts don't gain all the benefits of the more mature approach. Where we are now: [fossil fueled, energy intensive, low performing buildings] -> -> -> (the messy middle we are in now) -> -> -> [renewably energized, efficient, regenerative buildings] The Kendeda Building to me embodies this more mature approach to regenerative building practices. The ethos of regeneration pervades the project, it is palpable in the experience of the space, and as you peel back the layers of the project you find more and more ways in which it was a humble steward of its local environment. National Symposium Call for Abstracts The 2024 National Symposium will take place in Miami and Coral Gables, Florida from May 29-June 1. Researchers, practitioners, and enthusiasts involved in the process of preservation, conservation, renovation or transformation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement are invited to submit abstracts that investigate "Streams of Modernity: Postwar to Postmodern." Miami is a city whose location, diversity, and vibrant growth have historically made it an ideal destination for international travel, business, culture, and leisure. The region became an escape for post-World War II middle America, shaped largely by the desire for leisure and entertainment. Over the past decades, Miami has become a laboratory to explore new urban patterns, building types, evolving aesthetics, and emerging environmental consciousness. The symposium seeks to promote a broader understanding of the accomplishments of postwar to Postmodern architecture and culture, both nationally and in regional contexts such as South Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America. https://lnkd.in/gpcxscsT

What's it like working with a team to produce Let's Build #architecture events all year? From graphics, social media, and copy to speakers, venues, food & drink, sponsors, and more, it’s a whirlwind! Lockdown got us comfy working solo even with a remote team (in the background kind-of), but now we're still itching for face-to-face, in-person human interactions. Since it ended, we still crave in-person human interactions and connections. For most of us, the shift back to the office shows it, and is (still) teaching us how to juggle being in-person and working with a remote team online/ others working-from-home. It's like we forgot how to socialize, but now we're relearning! Being in a team of 10, 15, 20? It’s no walk in the park—dealing with different personalities and work styles can be tough. Collaborating with our team (some in-person and remote) is interesting. But, we thrive on it, producing top-notch events every year. Thanks to The Academy of Urbanism for convening us last night to explore how we can reduce carbon emissions in the built environment. Buildings and Construction account for a staggering 34% of ALL carbon emissions globally. The embodied carbon in construction materials accounts for 9% of ALL carbon emissions globally (it's part of that 34%). (IEA 2023). But the sector is also way ahead of a lot of other industries in our understanding of what we can do and need to do. So let's get on with it, PDQ!

Here are 10 tactics to plan for better walkability with immediate implementation, improving safety and reviving a city center in the process from Jeff Speck and The Congress for the New Urbanism.

This type of green "smart surface" solution should be in *every* neighborhood and community ... not just confined to or made exclusive for wealthier and/or predominantly white neighborhoods and communities. This should be ubiquitous - especially considering the grave climate and pollution threats we face - not uncommon
