🌐 Happy to share that my scientific article debut “Reflective Subjectivity in Audiovisual Nonfiction: Empowering Global South Media Makers and Decolonizing Storytelling” has been published and been available to read on Atlantis Press (part of Springer Nature) — https://lnkd.in/dpBhaiH3 💡Here’s the abstract: This study explores the application of reflective subjectivity, underpinned by autoethnography, in audiovisual nonfiction storytelling as a tool for empowering media creators in the Global South to challenge Western-centric views and decolonize storytelling. Amid a predominantly Western-centric media production and theorizing, this research identifies a gap in understanding how Global South media makers can effectively employ reflective subjectivity to address power dynamics and encourage cultural sensitivity. The primary objective is to identify innovative strategies and best practices that can facilitate the incorporation of these methods into their work through filmic forms that have been termed as, for instance, essay film, autobiographical documentary, or first-person documentary. Utilizing a comprehensive review of relevant literature and in-depth analysis of two case studies involving Global South filmmakers who have integrated reflective subjectivity and autoethnographic practices in storytelling forms the core of the methodology. The findings reveal a number of effective strategies for challenging dominant perspectives and promoting diversity in media representation. The study concludes with recommendations for future research and practices, emphasizing the value of reflective subjectivity as a catalyst for more inclusive and equitable media representation of and in the Global South. 📚Take your time to read it and looking forward to hearing any feedback!

How Do You Craft a Docuseries With 30 Plus Years of Footage? https://ift.tt/6rPcga1 As any seasoned documentary filmmaker can tell you, sometimes watching through and getting a feel for all of the footage at your disposal (both shot for the production as well as the collected archival library) can be extremely daunting. Most projects have days upon years of material to intimately know and become familiarized with to tell your best story. Some can be 30 plus years of two of the most photographed celebrities in the world. So is the case for Netflix's extremely well made docuseries Beckham, profiling the celebrity footballer through four episodes of dense history and insight into his life today. The series, exquisitely edited by Emmy-award-winning ACE Michael Harte (Three Identical Strangers, Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie), certainly feels crafted by creatives that didn't take any shortcuts crafting a mini series with a lot of heart and dedication to the subject they are profiling. The series is currently nominated for five Emmy awards, including best editing for Harte. We were lucky enough to sit down and talk the shop of the cut with Harte, where he breaks down the importance of obsessive organization, finding your voice as an editor, and so much more. Editor's note: The following quotes from Michael Harte are edited for length and clarity. Michael Harte: From PA to ACE "I was living in Dublin and there was a really strong documentary scene there. I started working with an editor as runner, and he showed up with a Harley Davidson—his name was Bob Caldwell. He was very cool guy and had a house on the beach in Dublin, which is unheard of, and even as an editor. And I was like, well, if I edit, this is what I'll get—a Harley Davidson and a house on the beach. I have neither. And he just let me cut from day one. We got on really well, and he was really encouraging. He had a tiny boutique edit suite and said, it's just me and, and when a project comes in, we're going to share the load, but you'll have to do some of the assistant edit work, but you're going to have to cut too because the industry started to take off. [After working there for a bit I went to London and eventually landed Three Identical Strangers]. That opened a lot of doors for me in terms of work." Define Your Workflow "It depends on the director and how much work they've done by the time I come on board. With Three identical Strangers, [director] Tim Wardle was very organized before we even started. He knew a lot of the story beats—the story had already happened. So I could focus entirely on the editing on that one. The third act was the only exception, that was unfolding as we were cutting it, so we were trying to find that part of the story. With other projects it can be different. I don't like the word "pre-production" anymore because—sorry to post-production—because a lot of the times you come on board and the production is far from finished...

Creating a documentary film is a multifaceted journey that involves meticulous planning, in-depth research, and creative storytelling. Here’s a breakdown of the key stages: 🎬 Concept Development Every documentary starts with a compelling idea. This stage involves brainstorming, defining the film’s purpose, and identifying the target audience. 🔍 Research and Pre-Production Thorough #research is essential. This includes gathering background information, finding credible sources, and securing interviews with experts or eyewitnesses. Location scouting, budget planning, and scheduling are also undertaken. 📝 Scriptwriting Even though documentaries often rely on real events and interviews, a #script provides a blueprint for the narrative flow, including voiceovers and key questions for interviews. 🎥 Filming With a solid plan, #filming begins. This involves capturing interviews, B-roll footage, and any other visual elements. Flexibility is key, as real-life events can sometimes take unexpected turns. ✂️ Editing This is where the magic happens. The #editing process involves organizing the footage, selecting the best takes, and weaving them together to create a cohesive story. Adding music, sound effects, and voiceovers enhances the emotional impact. #VideoEditing 🛠️ Post-Production Final touches are made, including color correction, audio mixing, and adding graphics or subtitles. Obtain final approvals and make necessary adjustments. 📡 Distribution The focus shifts to #distribution. Submit the documentary to film festivals, find a distributor, or share it on various platforms to reach the intended audience. Creating a #documentary is a rewarding process that combines art and journalism. Each step is critical to ensure the final product is informative, engaging, and impactful. #DocumentaryFilm Excited to share more about my experiences in documentary filmmaking and would love to hear about yours! Let's connect and exchange ideas. Feel free to reach out and connect!

Here's my 2024 LinkedIn Rewind, by Coauthor.studio: 2024: The year Hollywood dreams met Flemish reality, and independent filmmaking proved it's not just about making movies, but changing how we tell stories. 😎🎬 Between launching our fourth Hollywood Bootcamp and wrapping "Sound of the Somme," this year wasn't just about creating content - it was about challenging the entire media ecosystem. Er ontbreekt een visie dat externe content verwelkomt en samenwerkingen met onafhankelijke makers stimuleert! (Translation: There's a missing vision that welcomes external content and stimulates collaborations with independent creators) Three moments that defined our journey: 1. Hollywood Bootcamp 2025: Transforming film education one Los Angeles adventure at a time "Catching a plane to L.A. & returning 16 days later with your own short movie? During our 4th (!) edition of Hollywood Bootcamp 25, this crazy dream becomes the real deal." https://lnkd.in/ei5pbNxq 2. Sound of the Somme: Proving international storytelling transcends borders "We officially wrapped up shooting the international short film SOUND OF THE SOMME" https://lnkd.in/e4nmBzKq 3. Flemish Media Critique: Because someone needs to say it "Er ontbreekt een visie dat externe content verwelkomt en samenwerkingen met onafhankelijke makers stimuleert" https://lnkd.in/eNZqnsKq Highlights? We're not just counting trophies: • Another Hollywood Bootcamp that turned student dreams into reality • Completed "Sound of the Somme" - a testament to independent international collaboration • Advanced post-production on anthology features that challenge traditional storytelling • Got nominated for an Ultimas award (still waiting on that celebration drink!) 2025 is already looking like a transmedia storytelling revolution. We're developing three international fiction features, a VR series that'll make "HannaH & co" look like a warm-up, and continuing to push boundaries in how we create and consume content. The future of filmmaking isn't just about cameras and scripts - it's about breaking down barriers between creators, audiences, and storytelling formats. Who's ready to join this wild ride? Slide into my DMs if you want to collaborate, challenge the status quo, or just chat about the future of media. #IndieFilm #Filmmaking #MediaEducation #TransmediaStorytelling #LinkedInRewind #Coauthor #2024wrapped -- Get your 2024 LinkedIn Rewind! The #editing process in #filmmaking is rapidly evolving, with new tools streamlining post-production like never before. The ability to quickly assemble rough cuts and suggest edits has reduced the time and cost of editing, but it also raises questions about maintaining #creative control. As #technology continues to advance, how do we ensure that the artistic vision remains at the forefront of #film editing?
