The message of the 1st Biophilic Design Conference was clear. Using natural materials, images of Nature, plants, light and good ventilation is a proven way to improve health and wellbeing, worker creativity and productivity and connect people to the natural world whilst reducing our impact on the planet. Biophilia means love of life and these speakers really showed how the future can look so different when we work with the natural world rather than against it. Multi storey buildings from wood rather than concrete and steel have the same material costs whilst vastly reducing carbon. Andrew Waugh spoke about the impressive Black and White Building, central London's tallest engineered timber office block. Gijs Bruggink showed some amazing images of a proposed floating community to be built in the Netherlands. Prof. Geoffrey Proffitt spoke about the first Biophilic Living Village being built in Swansea which enables reconnection with nature in the urban environment. A mixed use development that includes affordable and shared ownership housing, as well as retail, commercial space and an urban farm. https://lnkd.in/emi_puY2 Oliver Heath researches, designs and advocates sustainable design, showing some beautiful builds and the clear benefits to people and planet. Great to see Jojo Mehta there speaking about Stop Ecocide International, the link between law and the love of life. Certainly an action packed day at the Barbican Centre. 9 hours of lectures with over 30 speakers. Thank you Vanessa Champion PhD for bringing these voices together. Decorator Project 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰: 𝗔 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗶𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 This year has been an incredible journey for our team at the Cultural Heritage Studies Program, University of Nova Gorica, as a proud partner of the Decorator Project! Together, we’ve worked toward sustainable construction, valorizing cultural heritage, and creating circular business models. Here's a recap of our highlights: 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟭𝟵-𝟮𝟬 | 𝗟𝗷𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗷𝗮𝗻𝗮, 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸 We kicked off with a focus on the 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗕𝗮𝘂𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀 and explored "Danubian cradle-to-cradle architecture and building processes." 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟯 | 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 Diving into 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀—solid, wood, and steel—highlighting prefabrication and innovative circular solutions. 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟵 | 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 We tackled challenges in the construction cycle—from planning to reuse—with advanced technologies transforming materials into nutrients for circular systems. 𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭-𝟮 | 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘂𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗮 & 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗮 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 Hosted by the University of Nova Gorica, this symposium explored circularity in the building sector as a 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲, addressing ecological, technical, sociocultural, and economic aspects. 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟳-𝟮𝟴 | 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗡𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴 Finalizing the 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹—a key milestone. Guided by the New European Bauhaus, we envisioned bringing circularity to urban environments in the Danube region. A green hero by the coast: The Heldentoren in Knokke-Heist 🌿 The Heldentoren, the tallest building on the Belgian coast, called for an innovative solution to combine sustainability and aesthetics. The challenge? Creating a green roof on a nearly 70-meter-high tower that is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. Our Approach: With a 400 m² green roof system from Sempergreen, we delivered a solution that captures rainwater, promotes biodiversity, and regulates the microclimate. The roof was designed to enhance the iconic appearance of the tower while withstanding extreme weather conditions. The Result: A unique project where nature and architecture seamlessly blend. The green roof is not only a visual highlight but also contributes to a livable and sustainable coastal area. "Thanks to Sempergreen, the Heldentoren now has a green roof that is both functional and aesthetically remarkable," said the client. It is a learning in action - overcoming perceived fragments in the work towards healthy, regenerative, circular places. The composition of building materials impacts the room you live in, the building the room is in, the city the building is in - and throughout it all ( that is, the entire Life Cycle ), people and our planet. It impacts both health and carbon emission levels. It all correlates. And we are learning about it alongside devoted makers, creators, innovators and policy makers. It is a hopeful challenge! 📢 90 years of Excellence: Project 3 - When hospitals go vertical 🚀 The ZNA Cadix, located in Antwerp's "Eilandje" district, is a vertical hospital structure bridging the park, docks, and city. Organized in layers, the ground floor opens as a public healthcare boulevard for pedestrians and cyclists, with motorized traffic managed underground. Characterized by a formal yet welcoming design, the building integrates abundant daylight, interior gardens, and outdoor spaces. A central spiral staircase adds organic movement. The striking green glass mosaic on the facades, combined with large glass surfaces, gives the building a unique appearance. ⚙ SECO’s decades of facade expertise ensured an optimal solution. For over 90 years, SECO has contributed to hospitals across Belgium, including Sint Niklaas, Oudenaarde, UZ Gent, Poperinge Maria Hospital, and AZ St Maarten Mechelen. 👉 Kö-Bogen II, Europe's largest green façade. 🇩🇪🌿 The Kö-Bogen II in Düsseldorf is an innovative and ecologically conscious building, whose most striking feature is its green cladding of 30,000 plants. 🇩🇪 📐 Designed by German architects Ingenhoven Architects, the building boasts Europe's largest vegetated facade, with a large part of its walls and roof covered by eight kilometers of hedges. 🌿🏢 Inspired by Land Art, this sustainable project comprises a five-storey main building and an adjacent three-storey triangular building. The main building, measuring 42,000 m² and 27 m high, houses offices, stores, restaurants and an underground parking lot. 🌳🪴🌻🌷 The building is entirely covered with plants, including trees, shrubs and various species of climbing plants. This massive plant wall contributes not only to the aesthetics but also to the temperature regulation of the building, reducing energy consumption for heating and air conditioning. 🌿🐝🦋 The variety of plants chosen promotes biodiversity in an urban environment. They attract a multitude of insects, birds and other animal species, creating a dynamic ecosystem in the heart of the city. 🪴☀️🌧️ Plants absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen, helping to improve air quality. They also help to reduce urban heat islands and manage rainwater, by absorbing part of the rainfall. 🌿😁 The presence of green spaces and nature in urban environments is known to improve the mental and physical well-being of residents.
