🦊 What if our buildings could become homes for plants and animals too?   NEST is a sustainable and aesthetic façade panel technology developed by Atelier ENTROPIC to improve a building’s acoustic and thermal performance 🏡 while creating a welcoming ecosystem for urban flora and fauna.   With support from 🇪🇺 EIT and the New European Bauhaus, NEST is now entering its implementation phase. 🏡 An Ecosystem, Not Just a House   🇪🇸 In Santa Eugènia, Mallorca, six social homes bring together social inclusivity, climate adaptation, and cultural heritage.   Designed by IBAVI, the public agency of the Balearic Islands’ Regional Government, these homes provide an affordable, high-quality space for vulnerable families, all while leaving a minimal environmental footprint. 🍃   The construction process prioritised 🧱 urban mining and reused materials—sandstone blocks, recycled wood, Arabic tiles, and other salvaged elements—rooting the homes in Santa Eugènia’s rich cultural heritage.   This approach drastically reduced CO2 emissions, water use, and waste compared to conventional methods. Beyond their sustainability, these homes protect residents from extreme heat waves 🪭 using eco-friendly cooling systems.   This project was one of the inspiring applicants for the last edition of the NEB Prizes. 🙌 Amazing news! The Municipality of Valverde de Burguillos, 🇪🇸 Spain, has won the first prize for excellence in “Integral and Sustainable Municipal Development," awarded by the regional government of Extremadura. Valverde impressed the jury with its municipal strategy, which integrates principles of the #NewEuropeanBauhaus. Key highlights include creating a local energy community, ⛲️ restoring historical fountains, promoting water culture, and aligning its 2030 Urban Agenda with NEB values—positioning it as a rural development model in Extremadura. Valverde is also hosting an annual three-day "Rural NEB Festival" with 🙋 NEB Partners Fundación Repoblación and Compañía Maximalista S. Coop., addressing rural depopulation and advancing NEB solutions. 👏 Congratulations to Valverde de Burguillos on this well-deserved recognition!
