Healthcare workers experience some of the highest rates of injuries caused by workplace violence than any other profession. Now, it appears based on survey data that the steps employers are taking are not viewed as sufficient by these at-risk workers. The recent Workplace Violence Prevention Training Annual Report for health care came back with the headline finding that healthcare workers don't feel confident in workplace safety plans. In fact, more than half (55%) said violence prevention plans at their workplace were only somewhat effective, or simply ineffective. In recent years, strides have been made to enhance #WorkplaceSafety through regulations, innovative technologies and hazard assessments. Despite these efforts, research highlights a troubling disparity: workers of color are more likely to be employed in high-risk occupations. This study shows that workplace safety is crucial not only for preventing incidents but also for enhancing overall well-being. Specifically, a safe work environment is positively linked to job satisfaction and inversely related to health complaints. Thriving at work serves as a significant mediator: When correctional officers feel safe at work, their experience of thriving at work is greater, which in turn translates into better health and higher job satisfaction. For organizations, especially in high-risk environments like correctional facilities, prioritizing safety doesn't just prevent incidents; it promotes a thriving workforce that feels satisfied and healthier.
